Part-Time Head Cook
The Commission on Aging is seeking a detail-oriented, reliable Part-Time Head Cook to oversee the back-of-house logistics and culinary execution. In this hybrid role, the selected candidate will be the operational backbone of the kitchen, spending roughly half your time managing inventory, ordering, and food costs, and the other half stepping onto the line to prepare high-quality meals. This position is perfect for an experienced cook or sous chef looking for a part-time schedule with a strong administrative focus.
Typical Schedule: Monday Friday, 7 am 1 pm. Expect occasional schedule changes for special events, filling in for absences, etc.
Examples of Duties
- Opens the kitchen in the morning by ensuring appliances, ovens, etc. are turned on and ready for the daily meal preparation.
- Responsible for the daily meal preparation. Pulls necessary food from freezer, cupboard, etc.
- Assists with last-minute menu changes or serving techniques.
- Assists with packaging the home-delivered meals.
- Packages bulk food containers for other meal sites, when necessary.
- Responsible for accurately calculating the number of daily meals needed, reducing the amount of leftover food.
- Responsible for daily kitchen cleanup when food preparation is complete.
- Strictly adhere to sanitary standards such as but not limited to wearing personal protective equipment (e.g. gloves, head coverings, aprons) and following food safety regulations (e.g. temperature control) to prevent injuries and foodborne illnesses.
- Attend training sessions and meetings as required by the Nutrition and Meals Coordinator.
- Assists with stocking and organizing incoming food deliveries.
- Assists with the weekly inventory of food and supplies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- Education: High School or equivalent
- Experience: One year in a food preparation environment preferred. Ability to cook large quantities using standardized recipes. Knowledge of senior nutrition is helpful. Ability to work effectively with others and under the direct supervision of the Head Cook/Food Service Manager.

- Must possess a valid Michigan's Driver's License.
- Must submit and pass pre-employment background and drug screening.
- Must possess current ServeSafe Manager Certification or have the ability to obtain within 90 days of Hire.
