Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring cardiac step-down experience and a South Dakota or compact RN license.

Details

• Work in the Heart & Vascular Unit (HVU) of a Level II Trauma Center teaching hospital
• 44-bed mixed acuity unit combining Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg patients
• Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, and post cath lab cases such as MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, and pacemaker malfunction
• Serves as backup stroke unit and medical overflow
• Step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP studies, and post pacemaker insertion patients
• RN to patient ratio of 1:4, occasionally 1:3 depending on acuity
• Support staff includes CNAs, phlebotomy for peripheral draws, 24/7 respiratory therapy, and occasional resource nurse
• Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring with RN strip confirmation twice daily
• Uses Epic EMR, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell
• Floating primarily to sister General PCU unit, with potential floats to MS/Tele or ICU within scope of practice
• 12-hour day and night shifts (0700-1900 or 1900-0700) with minimal switching between shift types
• Every other weekend rotation and every other holiday required
• No on-call responsibilities

Requirements

• Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
• Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience with at least 1 year specific to PCU
• Completion of an approved nursing education program required
• Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG/TAVR/post cardiac cath) required
• Knowledge of MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine) required
• Experience with Heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and chest tube management required
• TNK administration experience preferred
• Epic EMR experience preferred
• First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of nursing experience

Additional Information

• Provide step-down level cardiac nursing care in a fast-paced, mixed acuity environment
• May be asked to precept nursing students
• Facility orientation includes 2 partial days of education plus 3 shadow shifts on the unit
• Up to 7 days of time off may be approved, with full week requests requiring extension; no time off permitted during the first three weeks of August due to the annual Sturgis Bike Rally
• Navy blue scrubs required
• Free parking provided
• Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
• Permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a travel employee
• Highly traveler-friendly facility known for renewing travel contracts
