Under general supervision, performs general duty police work involving a wide range of duties performed to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and preserve order within the community. May be assigned to specialized duties at the discretion of management. Based on the duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description, this position is considered safety sensitive.
Essential job functions include inspecting the assigned patrol vehicle, operating the patrol vehicle, patrolling assigned areas, directing traffic, enforcing traffic laws, directing pedestrian traffic, investigating road damage, removing hazards from the roadway, issuing citations, checking vehicle license plates and registration, investigating traffic accidents, enforcing City, local, state, and federal laws, testifying in a courtroom setting, securing and protecting crime scenes, providing depositions or courtroom testimony, making arrests, advising persons under arrest, conducting stop and frisk searches, searching movable vehicles, searching persons, premises, or property, planning search methods, removing weapons from armed persons, advising victims, maintaining equipment, identifying and maintaining evidence, communicating over police radio, assisting in evacuations or rescues, advising in domestic disputes, speaking with citizens, maintaining field notes, obtaining information from witnesses, attending training, and performing specialized duties.
Material and equipment used include non-lethal weapons, two-way radio, computer restraint devices, and vehicle.
Minimum qualifications required include a high school diploma or GED, no prior experience or training required, state certified police officer, valid state driver's license, and being 21-45 years of age according to state statute.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include local, state, and federal laws, judicial system, laws pertaining to citizen disputes and domestic violence, recordkeeping, first aid procedures, departmental policies, public relations techniques, crime scene processing, crime prevention techniques, defensive tactics, crime patterns, computer applications, and modern procedures of police administration.
