Position Summary
The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing daily deli operations, maintaining product quality and freshness, providing excellent customer service, and ensuring food safety and sanitation standards are consistently followed. This position assists with leading deli associates, coordinating food production, maintaining inventory, controlling shrink, and ensuring the department is clean, stocked, and ready to serve customers.
Key Responsibilities

• Assist with overseeing daily deli operations and department workflow.
• Help coordinate food preparation and production based on sales, customer demand, and department needs.
• Prepare, package, label, stock, and merchandise deli products according to established procedures.
• Monitor product freshness, quality, appearance, temperature, and availability throughout the day.
• Ensure service cases, displays, counters, and shelves are clean, organized, attractive, and properly stocked.
• Provide friendly, courteous, and professional customer service.
• Assist customers with product questions, special orders, recommendations, and other deli needs.
• Slice, weigh, package, and price meats, cheeses, and other deli products as required.
• Prepare hot and cold food items according to established recipes and procedures.
• Assist with coordinating associate assignments, breaks, production responsibilities, and department coverage.
• Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering products, ingredients, packaging, and supplies.
• Receive, organize, rotate, and properly store department products and supplies.
• Follow proper product rotation, dating, labeling, and temperature-control procedures.
• Help minimize shrink and waste through proper ordering, production planning, handling, and rotation.
• Ensure products are accurately priced, labeled, and signed.
• Maintain required production, temperature, inventory, and sanitation records.
• Assist with opening and closing department procedures as assigned.
• Maintain clean and sanitized food preparation areas, equipment, utensils, service cases, and storage areas.
• Identify equipment, product, staffing, or operational concerns and communicate them to the Deli Manager or store leadership.
• Follow and reinforce company policies regarding food safety, sanitation, workplace safety, and loss prevention.
• Perform additional department responsibilities as assigned based on business needs.

Leadership Responsibilities

• Provide daily direction and support to deli associates.
• Assist with training new associates on food preparation, equipment operation, sanitation, food safety, and customer service.
• Coach associates on productivity, product quality, merchandising, cleanliness, and department standards.
• Help organize production priorities and assign responsibilities based on department needs.
• Monitor completed work to ensure quality, freshness, accuracy, and sanitation expectations are met.
• Lead by example by demonstrating excellent customer service, teamwork, urgency, and professionalism.
• Help maintain a positive, respectful, and productive work environment.
• Communicate department priorities and expectations clearly to associates.
• Support the Deli Manager with department planning and daily operational decisions.
• Take an active leadership role in department operations when the Deli Manager is unavailable.

Production & Merchandising Responsibilities

• Review daily production needs based on inventory, promotions, sales trends, and anticipated customer demand.
• Help ensure sufficient product is prepared and available during peak business periods.
• Maintain consistent product quality, portioning, packaging, labeling, and presentation.
• Monitor service cases and displays throughout the day and replenish products as necessary.
• Ensure promotional and seasonal items are properly prepared, stocked, signed, and displayed.
• Monitor production quantities to minimize unnecessary waste while maintaining product availability.
• Help ensure department displays remain attractive and customer-ready throughout the day.

Food Safety & Sanitation

• Follow established food-handling, temperature-control, and sanitation procedures.
• Monitor proper storage temperatures for refrigerated, frozen, hot, and prepared foods.
• Ensure preparation surfaces, slicers, utensils, equipment, and work areas are properly cleaned and sanitized.
• Follow proper procedures for product rotation, dating, labeling, storage, and disposal.
• Maintain appropriate personal hygiene and safe food-handling practices.
• Help ensure associates consistently follow department food safety and sanitation requirements.
• Immediately address or communicate food safety and sanitation concerns to appropriate leadership.

• Ability to follow established food safety and sanitation requirements.
• Dependable attendance and punctuality.
• Previous deli, food service, retail, food preparation, or leadership experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, lift, carry, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements throughout the shift.
• Ability to safely lift and move products, boxes, ingredients, trays, and department supplies as required.
• Ability to safely operate slicers, ovens, fryers, and other deli equipment after proper training.
• Ability to work around hot equipment, refrigerated areas, freezers, and varying temperatures.
• Ability to perform repetitive food preparation, slicing, packaging, stocking, and cleaning tasks.

Work Environment
The Assistant Deli Manager works primarily within the deli department, including food preparation, service, sales, storage, refrigerated, and freezer areas. The position requires balancing hands-on food preparation and customer service with associate leadership, production planning, inventory management, merchandising, sanitation, and daily department operations.
