Position Overview Cooperative Extension – Area Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor for Field and Vegetable Crops (Assistant Rank) serving the San Joaquin Valley. The advisor will implement an innovative, multi‑county extension education and applied research program that addresses insect and mite pest issues affecting field and vegetable crops in Fresno, Kings, Madera, and Tulare counties. The role involves conducting applied research and extending knowledge to growers and consultants, designing and managing IPM programs, and communicating findings through a variety of channels including farm consultations, workshops, webinars, and publications. Responsibilities Develop and implement pest management strategies that respond to endemic and invasive pests, regulatory changes, and landscape‑scale challenges to support growers’ profitability and environmental stewardship. Evaluate and adopt new tools, technologies, and research findings in collaboration with UC ANR academics, USDA scientists, and state agency personnel. Provide technical and educational support to clients through individual consultations, presentations, field days, and online seminars. Primary Clientele and Outreach The advisor will work closely with growers and consultants for field and vegetable crops, providing pest identification guidance, management recommendations, and outreach through workshops, webinars, and written resources. Key Research Areas Improving early detection of arthropod pests through monitoring, assessment, and IPM system refinement. Responding to endemic and invasive threats by developing immediate and long‑term management programs. Evaluating integrated pest management strategies, including biological, cultural, plant resistance, and chemical controls. Qualifications Master’s degree in entomology, pest management, or a closely related field. Broad understanding of IPM, crop production, biocontrol, pesticide use, and insect biology. Experience designing and implementing programmatic research and extension initiatives. Technical competence in experimental techniques. Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or Qualified Applicators License (QAL). Valid California driver’s license and proof of liability/property damage insurance. Unrestricted and permanent work authorization in the United States. Additional Skills Strong communication skills—written, oral, and digital—capable of tailoring complex information to diverse audiences. Collaboration and teamwork with external stakeholders and internal UC ANR staff. Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. Desired Experiences Successful extension programming and applied research history. Deep understanding of cropping systems, weed science, and pest management. Bilingual in Spanish or another regionally common language. Salary & Benefits Assistant Rank, Step I ($85,600) to Step VI ($108,600).
