Outside MachinistsOutside Machinists at Oceaneering's Marine Services Division (MSD) support submarine maintenance and repair by installing, repairing, and testing mechanical systems such as pumps, valves, hydraulics, and propulsion components. The role involves reading blueprints, performing precision measurements, aligning machinery, and working in an industrial shipyard environment with strict safety and quality standards. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across trades. Overtime may be available or required based on project needs. Travel may be required up to 75% of the year.Technical & Mechanical WorkSet up, align, and operate a wide range of portable machining tools and hand tools used in the trade.Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, verniers, height/depth gauges, and more to accurately record measurements.Review and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications to guide repair or installation work.Diagnose and troubleshoot abnormal mechanical conditions and recommend corrective actions on complex systems.Mechanical Systems Repair & OverhaulWork on the disassembly, repair, installation, testing, and inspection of shipboard machinery, including but not limited to:Propulsion machineryPumps, valves, and launchersVentilation equipment and discharge machinerySteering gear and propulsion plantsEvaporators, heaters, and condensersTorpedo tubes, shutter doors, and antenna mast mechanical groupsQuality, Documentation & SafetyComplete all required documentation, inspections, and equipment testing.Oversee and execute strict adherence to safety protocols and quality standards such as SUBSAFE, DSS-SOC, and more.Ensure work meets NAVSEA and company standards.Use appropriate PPE for skin, body, hearing, and vision protection as required.Leadership & Team SupportMentor and provide guidance to junior craftsmen as needed.Collaborate with team members to maintain safe, efficient, and high?quality work practices.Provide technical oversight by training team members in topics including mechanical procedures, blueprint interpretation, tolerance requirements, and more.CommunicationCommunicate clearly and professionally with coworkers and customers.Provide timely and accurate status updates using proper technical language.Additional InformationAdditional duties may be assigned.QualificationsRequired:High School Diploma/GED or equivalentMinimum six (6) years' experience as a Marine Equipment Mechanic or similar maritime industry experience.Demonstrated ability to lead and train others in advanced mechanical work, system testing, technical documentation, and safe work practices.Proven experience performing and documenting controlled work within SUBSAFE or similar quality programs.Ability to interpret technical drawings, maintenance standards, and tolerance requirements in order to perform manual tasks.Ability to obtain government base access, required security clearances, and any required technical certifications.Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.Must be a U.S. citizen who is not a dual citizen of any other country.Desired:Apprenticeship training, vocational schooling, or equivalent military mechanical experience.10+ years of experience as a Marine Equipment Mechanic or similar maritime industry experience.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other CharacteristicsAbility to collaborate effectively across trades while maintaining a professional demeanor.Ability to navigate basic computer systems to access training modules, communicate via email, and review required work documentation.Willingness and ability to seek clarification when instructions or procedures are unclear.Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule:Medical, dental, and vision coverageMental health and wellness resourcesRetirement savings plansLife and disability insurancePaid parental and maternity leavePaid time offTuition reimbursementEmployee Assistance ProgramCompensation: $32-$42 per hourWorking Conditions:Primarily outdoor work during daytime; occasional night work.Frequent exposure to moving and vibrating equipment.High humidity (often above 90%) and noise levels over 85 decibels.Intense light/glare, airborne dust, fumes, and gases.Occasional exposure to open flames, sparks, or hot equipment.Frequent work in hot (over 90°F) or cold (below 32°F) environments.Potential for distracting or uncomfortable sound levels.Stable work surfaces but varying environmental conditions.Physical Activity/Requirements:This role involves MEDIUM physical work and may require:Occasional:Lifting 20–50 lbsWorking in confined spacesKneeling, crawling, jumping, running, or working while lying downIdentifying color differencesWearing PPE for skin protectionFrequent:Lifting 10–25 lbsClimbing stairs/ladders; standing, balancing, stooping, squatting, and reachingWorking with overhead arm extensionOperating motor vehiclesConstant:Lifting up to 10 lbsWearing PPE for body, vision, and hearing protectionReasonable accommodation will be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.Career DevelopmentIn addition, we make a priority of providing learning and development opportunities to enable employees to achieve their potential and take charge of their future.
