Our 32-bed Oncology Unit (6 South) specializes in caring for surgical and medical oncology patients in a supportive, team-driven environment. Identify opportunities for and provide individualized patient care according to patient needs. Perform an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the patient's ongoing nursing care needs. Include data from the patient/significant others in the assessment as appropriate. Prioritize data collection according to patient's immediate needs. Use assessment findings in discharge planning. Develop, review, revise, and individualize the plan of care to address nursing care needs for optimal patient outcomes. Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate. Provide teaching specific to the patient's health care problem. Care plan reflects continuing care needs and/or referrals for discharge/transfer. Implement interventions consistent with the plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner. Follow nursing protocols and standards of care for the unit. Use current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature. Evaluate patient care to determine response to care/interventions for optimal outcomes. Monitor outcomes and document patient response to interventions. Evaluate patient capabilities and/or limitations related to nursing and medical interventions. Continually monitor the patient and/or family ability to manage care needs after dismissal. Give a complete verbal or written change of shift report (SBAR) to the oncoming care provider. Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations (physical and mental). Perform technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety. Able to competently perform technical skills independently. Be accountable to learn new skills and equipment within area specifications and time frame. Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment per product information and policy manuals. Follow procedures for obtaining, returning, or disposing of equipment and supplies. Maintain professional behavior and appearance; participate in quality improvement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Communicate effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level; be approachable and professional with health professionals, staff, patients, and families. Take pride in the unit by participating in restocking and maintaining a clean environment. Maintain competence in area of experience; participate in meetings/committees as needed. Initiate actions to correct, prevent, or minimize risks to patients, families, or staff. Complete appropriate report forms for risks (e.g., variance/incident reports). Communicate unresolved issues to appropriate personnel. Work within the scope of practice as defined by the State Nurse Practice Act. Observe precautions with hazardous medications or handling excreta from patients who have received hazardous medications. Review, delegate, and evaluate plans for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels of practice in line with the Nurse Practice Act and professional standards. Follow the right task, right person, right communication, and right feedback principles as applicable. Schedule Days- 7am-7pm; 24 or 36 hours per week Job Description & Requirements Education Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college of nursing required or obtained within 5 years from date of hire for nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). For MFH Surgery Main: Graduate from an accredited Diploma School of Nursing/College of Nursing with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. BSN preferred. For NMH Oncology: Electrocardiogram (EKG) course required. For NMH Medical Observation & Ortho Neuro: NIH Stroke Scale training or proof of training required in first 6 months of hire. Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements. Experience If the specialty is not listed, no prior experience is required: Experience required: MJE Radiation Oncology: 3 to 5 years hospital or office experience with emphasis in oncology or med/surg nursing. NMH Palliative Care: Minimum 2 years related RN experience. NMH IV Team: 3 to 6 months on-the-job training to learn proper techniques and equipment. NMH Surgery Main: 2 years of OR experience for weekend positions. Experience preferred: MFH Surgery Main: 2 to 5 years inpatient nursing experience and prior surgical experience. MJE Surgery Main: Prior surgical experience. MJE Behavioral Health IP: 1 year hospital experience. NMH IV Team: Venipuncture experience. License/Certifications Required: Current Nebraska RN License, valid compact multistate license, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire. Preferred: Certification(s) in area of specialty from NCC within 1 year of eligibility. NMH & MWH & MFH Surgery Main: CNOR
