Pediatric Sonographer

Department Overview The Doernbecher Pediatric and Fetal Echocardiography Lab is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to join our team. As the only fetal, pediatric thoracic and pediatric transesophageal IAC/ICAEL certified laboratory in the State of Oregon, the lab serves Doernbecher Children’s Hospital as well as outreach sites throughout Oregon. Core Responsibilities Candidates must perform duties at a highly technical level with limited supervision, maintain high medical ethics, and independently produce high-quality imaging on neonatal to adult patients using transthoracic, 3D, and transesophageal echocardiography. The position supports strategic programs including Pediatric Cardiology Ambulatory, Cardio‑thoracic surgery, NICU, PICU, Fetal Therapy/Perinatology, clinical outreach, and research missions. Function/Duties of Position Echo Procedures Determine and instruct patient preparation; explain procedures; position patients for optimal imaging; adjust equipment controls; modify studies to accurately demonstrate anatomy, physiology, hemodynamics, and pathology; provide additional views as needed; manipulate transthoracic transducer; select appropriate scans; record representative images for cardiologist review; perform transthoracic echocardiography on pediatric patients, including complex congenital lesions and pre/post‑operative assessment; image premature and micro‑premature infants on high‑frequency ventilators. Provide transthoracic echocardiography to outreach pediatric patients across Oregon; give measurements, estimations, angles, and guidance during invasive procedures such as pericardial centesis, balloon atrial septostomy, blade atrial septostomy, balloon valvuloplasty; assist physician with transesophageal and/or intra‑vascular ultrasound in catheterization laboratories or surgical suites. Records and Reports Schedule patients from phone or written physician requests; obtain clinical data; arrange digital images; maintain patient files and clinical records; report summary of patient history and pertinent findings to cardiologist. Other Duties As Assigned Additional tasks may include equipment maintenance, quality assurance, teaching, and participation in laboratory research and educational activities. Required Qualifications Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Non‑Invasive Cardiovascular Technology, Ultrasound, or equivalent. Board certification or eligibility for certification by ARDMS as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer; sonographer license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging. For positions on adult units, CCI certification accepted in lieu of ARDMS. Active registration required with ongoing CME. Board‑certified BLS within 30 days of hire. Preferred Qualifications At least two years of pediatric echocardiography experience with complex congenital heart disease; fetal experience is a bonus. Clinical experience in ambulatory, NICU/PICU, surgical suites, and catheterization laboratory settings with complex congenital heart disease patients. Additional Details Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; position is based at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital with required travel to other offsite locations within Oregon. Responsibilities include overnight call assignments multiple times per month and weekend coverage. Physical requirements include lifting, bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and walking; ability to lift 35 lbs; ability to assist patients weighing up to >200 lbs. Work environment exposes staff to blood, body fluids, and radiation; appropriate protective equipment and training are provided.
