Respiratory Therapist

Position Summary Assess, treat and care for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for respiratory therapies, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check and operate equipment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities All duties and responsibilities shall be performed as set forth in established policies and procedures. Adheres to and assures compliance with Code of Conduct, Resident Rights, facility policies and procedures and all applicable rules, regulations and standards as set by Federal, State and regulating bodies. Interpret, organize and implement orders from physicians, nurse practitioners or licensed medical professionals directing resident care. Assist and continually monitor residents for proper position of airways, oxygenation, and respiratory stability. Collaborate and coordinate respiratory services with other resident services to ensure continuity of the resident’s total regimen of care. Perform necessary duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, and any other required documents. Be clinically responsible for the administration of respiratory therapies as prescribed, including ventilator management, weaning and maintenance; tracheostomy maintenance and cleaning; suction; BiPap/CPAP management; aerosol administration; and other therapies as directed. Obtain, document and report all pertinent vital signs; review and revise patient respiratory care plans; conduct complete respiratory assessments upon admission and continually during shifts. Inform Respiratory Director of new admissions, discharges, and changes of condition; report any change of condition to appropriate nursing staff, IDT team and physicians as clinically appropriate. Ensure that respiratory therapy notes and charting are informative and descriptive of services provided and that response to care is documented. Check residents unable to call for assistance frequently. Follow all infection control precautions and safety regulations, including personal protective equipment and dress code. Report to director any medication, medical supply, equipment needs or unsafe equipment in use. Qualifications Current Respiratory Therapist license issued by the state. Evidence of being free of tuberculosis infection upon hire as required by policies. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. Ability to make independent decisions when warranted. Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public. Patience, tact, cheerful disposition, enthusiasm, and willingness to handle difficult residents. Follows written and oral instructions.
