Job Title: Sterile Products Technician Specialist I Job Description

The Sterile Products Technician Specialist I supports pharmacists by performing advanced technical functions and assisting with professional activities to ensure safe, accurate, and timely pharmaceutical services for patients, staff, and physicians. This role focuses on sterile compounding and quality assurance, working under the direct supervision of the pharmacist-on-duty while helping to maintain compliance with applicable pharmacy standards and regulations.

• Prepare parenteral products, including IV solutions, IVPBs, and TPN solutions, in accordance with established policies, procedures, and organizational standards.
• Ensure all sterile compounding activities comply with USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 requirements through ongoing competency completion and accurate compounding documentation.
• Process printed medication orders and stock medication requests in a timely and accurate manner.
• Prepare, process, and maintain ambulance trays and code cart trays according to established protocols.
• Answer telephone calls and respond promptly and professionally to inquiries at the customer service window.
• Receive and replace returned medications in appropriate storage areas, ensuring proper handling and inventory control.
• Monitor medication par levels, reorder stock as needed, and restock controlled substances in compliance with regulatory and organizational policies.
• Provide oversight of the sterile products personnel training program, ensuring the program clearly defines required training, frequency, and competency assessment methods.
• Conduct training for compounding personnel or oversee training performed by assigned trainers, ensuring staff acquire the knowledge and skills needed for their assigned compounding tasks.
• Document all aspects of the sterile products training program, including completion of training and competency assessments.
• Maintain and support quality assurance and quality control programs for sterile products, with a focus on USP 797 and USP 800 compliance.
• Establish and uphold systems to ensure adherence to sterile compounding procedures and to address quality issues promptly.
• Evaluate and respond to complaints and adverse events related to sterile products, including conducting appropriate investigations and implementing corrective actions.
• Review the sterile products quality assurance program at least annually, document findings, and recommend or implement improvements as needed.
• Collaborate with pharmacists and other pharmacy staff to support safe and efficient medication use processes throughout the department.

• Current Wisconsin pharmacy technician license or registration.
• At least 3 years of pharmacy experience, including sterile compounding experience.
• Pharmacy technician experience in a hospital pharmacy setting, including sterile compounding, strongly preferred.
• Active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification.
• Proficiency in sterile products preparation and sterile compounding techniques.
• Knowledge of USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 standards and their application in daily practice.
• Ability to accurately process medication orders, stock requests, ambulance trays, and code cart trays.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and safety.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with pharmacists, staff, physicians, and customers at the service window.
• Organizational skills to manage inventory, monitor par levels, and restock controlled substances in a compliant manner.
• Ability to participate in and support training and competency assessment for sterile compounding personnel.
• Capability to contribute to quality assurance and quality control programs, including documentation and program review.

• Experience working within a structured pharmacy career ladder or interest in progressing through roles such as Compound Pharmacy Technician, Sterile Compounding Technician, Senior Pharmacy Technician, and Sterile Products Technician Specialist.
• Familiarity with pharmacy information systems and medication distribution workflows.
• Ability to interpret and follow detailed policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
• Experience supporting or managing training programs in a pharmacy or healthcare setting.
• Strong problem-solving skills to address quality issues, complaints, and adverse events related to sterile products.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development in pharmacy practice.

This is a full-time position with varied shifts, with the primary work performed during the day shift. The role is based in a hospital pharmacy environment with a strong focus on sterile compounding and adherence to USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 standards. The technician works in cleanroom and sterile compounding areas, handling parenteral products and maintaining strict aseptic techniques. The work involves regular interaction with pharmacists, other pharmacy technicians, and clinical staff, as well as responding to telephone inquiries and customer service window requests. The environment supports professional growth through a defined pharmacy career ladder, offering opportunities to advance from compounding technician roles to Senior and specialist positions.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Pleasant Prairie, WI.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $27.50/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
