Experienced Nurses Needed
University Medical Center is seeking experienced nurses for our 11 Acute Care Units:
Acute Care Specialties:
1. Cardiology/Telemetry:
Comprehensive cardiac monitoring
Specializes in the management of patients with arrhythmias, heart failure, myocardial infarction, post-cardiac procedures, and continuous telemetry.
Advanced patient care population
Serves adult medical-surgical patients with cardiac and vascular conditions.
Expertise in cardiac vasoactive therapy
Provides safe administration and close monitoring of non-titrating vasoactive cardiac drug therapies, ensuring optimal outcomes in a controlled acute care environment
2. Controlled Access:
The patient population includes those in custody or incarcerated:
• No patient in cardiac drips
• General medical surgical patients
• Pre-op and post-op patients
• Patient is shackled to the bed (1 leg)
• Minimum of 1 guard per patient 24/7
• Always accompanied by 1 deputy for any patient interactions
• Safe place to work; 24/7 available lieutenant on site, plus captain and major on day shift.
3. General Care:
Admission Procedures
• Blood transfusion and blood product administration
• Radioactive iodine therapy
• Symptom management and supportive care
• Post-operative monitoring and treatment initiation
Admission Diagnosis
• General medical patients
• Hematology
• Pathology
• Palliative care / End-of-life
• Sickle cell anemia
• Gynecology
• Rheumatology
• Urology
• Chronic disease
• Oncology overflow patient
4. General Medical:
Diverse Medical-Surgical Patients
Nurses gain exposure to both medical and post-operative surgical patients, enhancing critical thinking and versatility.
Wide Range of Diagnoses
Patients include those with renal needs, stable cardiac conditions, and complex comorbidities, providing rich learning opportunities.
Management of Care
Staff perform a variety of competencies such as telemetry monitoring, central line care, bladder scanning, IV management, and wound care.
5. Medicine:
Isolation Patients
Airborne, droplet, and contact precautions.
General Medical-Surgical
Patients needing IV antibiotics, fluids, or wound care.
Cardiac
Arrhythmias requiring telemetry monitoring.
Vascular
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)
Sepsis
Early identification and treatment of sepsis and septic shock.
Trauma
Non-ICU trauma patients (e.g., motor vehicle collisions, falls).
6. Neurology Stroke:
Cerebral Vascular Accident, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Seizures, Craniotomy/Craniectomy, Spinal Surgeries, and general Medical/Surgical
Stroke population
Stroke Center of Excellence; Comprehensive Stroke Center (Coming soon!)
National Association of Epilepsy Centers
Level 3 Accreditation
Seizure population
Epilepsy monitoring unit
Trauma population
Traumatic brain injuries, gunshot wounds and motor vehicle crashes
7. Observation:
The average length of stay is 2-4 days.
Cardiac (chest pain, atrial fibrillation, syncope, hypertension), respiratory (shortness of breath, asthma, COPD, pneumonia), metabolic (hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, dehydration, AKI), and infectious/ other (cellulitis, allergic reaction, GI symptoms).
Patient care services Medication management, wound care treatment & management, care for patients receiving dialysis, central line care & management, and telemetry monitoring
8. Oncology:
Admission procedures
• Chemotherapy
• Blood administration
• Radioactive iodine therapy
Admission Diagnoses
• Cancer
• Cancer treatment-related admissions
• Benign hematology
• Surgical oncology
9. Surgery:
General Surgery
Abdominal washouts, appendectomies, hernia repairs.
Vascular/ reconstruction surgery
Revascularization, breast surgeries, skin grafts.
Colorectal surgery
Fistulas, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer.
Genitourinary surgery
Renal surgeries, bladder procedures, pelvic organs prolapse.
Management of
Skin grafts - flap checks
10. Trauma:
Penetrating wounds and perforating wounds
Multiple gunshot wounds (MGSWs).
Blunt trauma
Collisions, falls, assaults, motor vehicle accidents (MVCs), sports injuries, blows from blunt objects, and damage to internal organs.
Falls
Same level falls, falls from height, syncopal falls.
Total hip and knee replacement
Artificial joint (prosthesis), hip fractures, osteoarthritis, and removal of damaged joints.
Fractures
Traumatic, pathological, and stress fractures.
11. Transitional Recovery Unit:
Weight loss surgery
Gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, surgical revisions
General surgery
Hernia repair

The Must-Haves Minimum:
Current nursing license to practice in Louisiana and as defined by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
