Position Title: Shelter Licensed Veterinary Technician – Full-time Starting Wage: $30.00‑$35.00/hr Purpose Summary To provide comfort and health care for animals at the shelter, assisting the veterinary and shelter team with daily activities of the PAWS Spay/Neuter Clinic and medical program, helping to maintain efficient shelter health operations. Essential Responsibilities Perform daily activities of PAWS' Spay/Neuter Clinic, including scheduling surgeries; drawing and processing lab work; taking digital radiographs; preparing animals for surgery; assisting veterinarians during surgery; and monitoring animals before, during, and after surgery. Provide accurate information and courteous service to the public, in person and via phone calls, about all aspects of animal care and shelter operations. Work directly with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and operational staff to assure the safety and health of animals at the clinic and ensure all procedures are performed efficiently and effectively. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation necessary for the clinic, keep equipment in good working order, and report structural or operational problems that may affect animal care. Under direction, euthanize animals per written policies and procedures using sodium pentobarbital. Maintain accurate record‑keeping for all animals treated at the clinic, including controlled substance logs, surgery and exam records, and other required documentation. Administer immunizations, medications, and treatment for injuries or illness as prescribed, and perform other health care procedures such as dental treatment. Handle emergency and critical care treatment, pre‑medicate, restrain and handle animals, collect and analyze laboratory diagnostics, position and image radiographs, induce and monitor anesthesia, and assist in surgery as needed. Purchase pharmaceuticals, hospital, and laboratory supplies; manage inventory and dispose of expired drugs and supplies. Perform laboratory tests (hematology, parasitology, cytology) and maintain sanitation of surgical packs and instruments. Assist veterinarians with farm animal exams, foster appointments, and other clinical duties. Assist with daily care and monitoring of shelter animals, feeding, cleaning, and observing health status. Maintain the clinic pharmacy, including ordering and dispensing medications. Other Responsibilities Clean animal housing and treatment areas, provide food, care, and socialization per procedures. Assist clients during low‑income surgery days and foster parents during re‑checks and visits. Support management in evaluating medical and behavioral needs of animals through accurate records and status changes. Train shelter staff in evaluating and treating animal health problems, and oversee, train, and aid volunteers in day‑to‑day duties. Humanely euthanize shelter patients per written policies under veterinarian direction. Ensure compliance with disease control and health and safety rules, communicating with staff for consistency. Display a positive attitude and act as a motivating force for all staff members. Assist in supporting training of veterinary interns and externs as needed. Respond appropriately during emergencies, taking directions from a veterinarian and directing others while maintaining competency. Provide daily care for animals in hospital or quarantine when staff are unavailable. Stay current on veterinary technology methods through literature review, conferences, meetings, workshops, and networking. May be assigned other duties by the CAS Veterinarian or CAS Management Team. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift at least forty (40) pounds and, with assistance, heavier weights. Duties require lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, and moderate strenuous activity; ability to stand for long periods.
