Safety Specialist

Responsibilities include executing the site safety program on an assigned project. Educates and trains project staff in safety requirements and best practices in incident prevention. Ensures compliance with company and customer safety policies. Other duties may be assigned.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

• Build working relationships with customer representatives, project staff, and subcontractor safety representatives.
• Assist in creating accurate safety reports and accident investigation documents.
• Assist in staff safety training and subcontractor development.
• Represent company in a positive and professional manner with the customer and subcontractors.
• Create and facilitate safety trainings and orientations aligned with project specifics and schedules.
• Ensure compliance with the company’s current safety manual, policies, and expectations.
• Spend the majority of time in the field observing work, coaching, auditing, and engaging craft employee-owners.
• Help project supervision resolve safety problems and issues in the field.
• Identify and evaluate hazards associated with process piping installation and mechanical construction, including pressure, stored energy, hot work, lifting and rigging, chemical exposure, hazardous gases, and work at elevation.
• Understand and evaluate safety controls for process piping installation, including proper work planning, permits, PPE, barricading, line identification, isolation, pressure control, testing procedures, and coordination with affected personnel.
• Demonstrate experience with LOTO and energy isolation for process piping systems , including pressurized piping, steam, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, natural gas, chemical piping, and other hazardous or specialty gas systems.
• Understand the hazards and required controls associated with chemical and hazardous-gas piping systems , including potential exposure, residual pressure or energy, line breaking, atmospheric monitoring, emergency response, and appropriate PPE and work controls.
• Verify that appropriate energy-isolation procedures are in place before work begins on process piping or other systems containing hazardous or stored energy.
• Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions, uncontrolled hazards, or deviations from approved safety procedures are identified, and work with supervision and craft personnel to correct the issue before work resumes.
• Evaluate material-handling operations involving forklifts and attachments. When an attachment is added to a forklift—such as a boom, jib, fork extension, clamp, or other lifting device—verify that the equipment and configuration can safely handle the intended load.
• Evaluate forklift operations based on:
• * Load weight and ****load center****.
  • Forklift stability and rated capacity.
  • Attachment and fork configuration.
  • Proper load securement.
  • Pipe length, dimensions, and center of gravity .
  • Overhead and side clearances.
  • Travel path and surrounding hazards.
  • Ground conditions and surface stability.
  • Manufacturer requirements and approved attachment use.
  • Whether the attachment or configuration changes the forklift’s rated capacity.
• Fill in for the Site HSE Manager during absences.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required for this Position:

Certifications

• OSHA 30 required.
• OSHA 500 or OSHA 510 preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of maintenance and construction safety experience .
• Demonstrated safety experience supporting process piping or mechanical construction , preferably in an industrial, refinery, chemical, semiconductor, or other complex process environment.
• Strong understanding of the hazards and controls associated with pressurized piping, steam, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, natural gas, chemical piping, and hazardous/specialty gas systems .
• Experience with LOTO and energy isolation involving process piping and systems containing hazardous or stored energy.
• Experience with line breaking, pressure testing, piping tie-ins, and stored-energy hazards .
• Experience supporting work involving chemical and hazardous-gas piping systems , including atmospheric monitoring, exposure controls, PPE, emergency response, and appropriate work permits.
• Experience evaluating hazards and controls associated with forklift operations involving attachments and non-standard loads , including load center, stability, rated capacity, attachment/fork configuration, load securement, pipe length, center of gravity, overhead and side clearances, travel path, ground conditions, and manufacturer requirements.
• Ability and willingness to exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions or uncontrolled hazards are identified.

This is a full-time position working 40+ hours per week .
