Project Position Project Position No End Date End Date n/a Special Note This is an overtime eligible position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This is a cyclic position scheduled to work full-time September through June and half-time July and August. Position Purpose This position delivers high-quality, professional nursing care to a diverse collegiate student population. Operating within an ambulatory care setting, this role combines hands‑on clinical care with proactive patient education in strict accordance with Washington State laws and clinic protocols. This clinical professional position requires sharp assessment skills, strong critical thinking, and the ability to balance independent execution with team collaboration. The incumbent demonstrates compassion, cultural sensitivity, and excellent communication skills to advocate effectively for student and campus community wellness. Nature and Scope Essential Functions Clinical Care and Triage Acute and Chronic Care: Deliver skilled nursing interventions for acute illnesses, injuries, and the stabilization of chronic conditions. Triage Protocols: Conduct telephone and in-person triage utilizing standardized protocols to determine appropriate care levels. Patient Assessment: Evaluate chief complaints, gather medical histories, and measure vital signs. Medication Administration: Administer oral, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications as ordered by providers under licensed supervision. Phlebotomy and Lab Work: Perform venipuncture for blood specimens and handle processing. Clinical Procedures: Prepare sterile fields, assemble surgical trays, and assist with minor procedures, wound irrigation, EKGs, guaiac tests, glucose monitoring, and oxygen therapy. Immunization Management: Administer routine, travel, and public health immunizations required for college matriculation. Health Education and Promotion Campus Health Resource: Serve as a healthcare information resource for students and the wider campus community. Self-Care Education: Counsel students on health maintenance, disease prevention, and independent self‑care strategies. Mentorship: In the event there are student interns, provide instruction and demonstrations in clinical procedures in both a front and back office environment. Documentation and Records Management Secure Electronic Medical Records Management: Maintain precise, confidential electronic medical records adhering to HIPAA and FERPA compliance. Care Documentation: Ensure all patient interactions, treatments, and communications are logged accurately. Immunization Compliance: Oversee and audit student immunization records to ensure compliance with institutional policies. Coordination and Emergency Response Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Partner with physicians, physician assistants, and mental health professionals to execute cohesive patient care plans. Care Referrals: Facilitate seamless referrals to internal campus departments and external community resources for complex medical or psychological needs. Stakeholder Liaison: Communicate effectively with students, families, and campus departments regarding health issues while maintaining strict confidentiality per state ( WAC / RCW ) and federal ( FERPA / HIPAA ) laws and statutes. Emergency Preparedness: Maintain active readiness to respond to clinical emergencies implementing current CPR / AED protocols. Additional Duties Knowledge Skills and Abilities Strong foundation in nursing principles, ambulatory medical practices, and public health promotion. Skill and ability in performing patient assessments and skilled nursing interventions, following clinical protocols, and performing clinical procedures. Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records systems with ability to create, organize, and maintain medical records and files with knowledge of applicable legal requirements. Ability to manage highly sensitive, confidential student data with absolute discretion and HIPAA and FERPA compliance. Ability to work independently while under pressure with frequent interruptions. Ability to handle multiple tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy. Skill and ability in performing front office management skills, such as greeting patients, fielding calls and questions, and gathering, processing, and disseminating accurate information. Skill and ability in providing instruction and demonstrations in clinical procedures in both a front and back office environment. Ability to lead the work of others, including assigning, instructing, and checking work. Excellent communication skills, such as using tact when communicating with professional and student staff. Strong patient and customer service skills. Ability to create, maintain, and manage appropriate medical and mental health related postings on Student Wellness Services’ social media accounts, including Facebook and Instagram. Ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and individuals. Familiarity with Rapid Cycle change practices and quality improvement. Technological skill and ability to work with standard office equipment and computer programs, such as Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.). Ability to prioritize daily work, handle competing demands, and meet deadlines. Understanding of multiculturalism and ability to work effectively with students and staff who are diverse in race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, veteran’s status, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, physical and mental challenges, and political values. Familiarity with local medical and community resources for effective collaboration with external as well as internal departments. Ability to work in an ambulatory clinic environment requiring prolonged standing, walking, and physical stamina with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases, requiring strict adherence to OSHA and clinical safety protocols. Minimum Qualifications Desired Qualifications One year of experience in an outpatient clinic, urgent care, public health, or school/college health setting. Experience demonstrating and/or instructing on clinical procedures. Conditions of Employment Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work. This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by the Classified collective bargaining agreement. Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. Must be a graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program. Must possess and maintain unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse license in Washington State. Must possess and maintain BLS / CPR and AED certification for healthcare providers. Must be able to work in person 8:30 – 5:00 Monday through Friday.
