Phlebotomist

Minimum Qualifications Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures. Preferred Qualifications and Certifications Certified as a phlebotomist by American Medical Technologist (AMT), National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP). Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program. Completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection. Completion of an accredited allied health professional/occupation education program which includes phlebotomy training and completion of 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection. Experience Phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinic setting. Core Duties and Responsibilities Performs blood collection using established laboratory guidelines to acquire acceptable specimens for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as requested by ordering providers. Follows standard operating procedures to perform diagnostic procedures accurately. Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, computer systems, tube transport systems, and timers in accordance with standard operating procedures. Restocks the work area with needed supplies to assist coworkers in performing their duties. Demonstrates knowledge of patient care requirements for all age groups as required by laboratory SOPs. Uses time, materials, and resources efficiently, prioritizing workload to provide optimal patient care and efficiency. Collects specimens promptly to reduce wastage of time, materials, and resources, and to avoid delays in result reporting. Completes assigned workload within established time frames, adjusting workload organization as needed. Maintains effective communication with laboratory sections, administrative office, coworkers, patients, and other departments to identify and resolve problems in support of patient care. Answers the telephone promptly and courteously, identifying self and unit. Participates in staff meetings, in‑services, health screens, and stays current with communications to incorporate new information into routine use. Communicates unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the supervisor promptly to expedite ordering. Refers technical problems or unusual patient occurrences to supervisor or nursing staff. Contacts nursing staff or ordering provider promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test requisitions/orders, and requests new requisitions/orders per laboratory policies. Notifies patient care units promptly of uncollected specimens to expedite accurate test results. Communicates necessary procedure information to patients and the public before, during, and after the designated procedure. Performs basic clerical duties to support efficient laboratory operations. Accurately completes computer entry of all requested laboratory tests, ensuring specimens and requisitions are properly labeled and completed per laboratory policies. Assists hospital personnel in obtaining laboratory results and/or referring them to the appropriate area or laboratory. Contacts patient care units promptly for resubmission of improperly labeled specimens or completed requisitions to expedite accurate testing. Participates in educational initiatives to meet current and future needs of the phlebotomy service, laboratory, hospital, and university. Supports instruction, supervision, and evaluation of residents, students, and other healthcare professionals as established by laboratory policies. Engages in ongoing continuing education via in‑services and impromptu consultations. Participates in training, supervision, and evaluation of new employees as per laboratory policies. Physical Requirements Heavy/hard work: requires stamina, moving, stooping, bending, reaching, standing, pushing a cart, lifting and loading supplies, and walking. Schedule and Hours Position will work 6 p – 6:30 a m. Rotating weekends and holidays. 36 hours scheduled weekly. Night shift (United States).
