Under the supervision of the Nurse Director, performs a variety of clerical/clinical duties in support of the unit.

I. Major Responsibilities:

• Performs clerical functions on the patient care unit and/or other patient care areas as assigned
• Assembles patient records
• Files and documents patient information, i.e. Laboratory and X-ray reports
• Keeps records up-to date, in order and supplied with appropriate forms
• Transcribes physician orders accurately and timely
• Initiates orders via order entry system accurately and timely
• Facilitates effective communication and coordinates unit activities
• Answers telephone appropriately and courteously
• Takes and relays messages in a timely manner
• Places calls as requested to physicians, and other professional or ancillary services
• Greets and directs visitors, physician, and staff from other departments
• Opens, sorts and routes mail accurately and in a timely manner
• Orders, receives and stocks required inventory of stationary and forms (linen, sterile supplies; food and kitchen supplies as requested)
• Assists the manager by performing administrative duties as requested

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education: Required: High School diploma/GED

Preferred: Medical Assistant certification preferred, Classes in medical terminology preferred

Experience/Skills: Required: Computer skills required, Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, Demonstrated prioritization and organizational skills, Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions OR equivalent combination of the above

Preferred: Experience in a hospital or health care setting preferred, Experience with Meditech computer system preferred

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Constantly: Sitting, walking, reaching, grasping, repetitive movements, working indoors, high stress level, Precise motor skills, vision, hearing

Frequently: Standing, twisting, bending, kneeling

Occasionally: Pushing, pulling, climbing
