Captives Underwriting Officer

Underwriting Officer – Captives Solutions Portfolio The Hartford is seeking an Underwriting Officer who will lead the underwriting strategy and execution for the Captives Solutions portfolio, including Single Parent Captives (SPC) and Group Captives. The role reports to the Large Commercial National Underwriting Officer and is responsible for portfolio management, underwriting appetite, authority maintenance, referrals, and scaling a profitable captive platform. Responsibilities Financial Execution : Own the operating plan results, develop execution strategies, monitor financial performance, and improve submission‑to‑bind conversion. Product & Underwriting Leadership : Provide subject‑matter expertise, develop underwriting appetite guidance, manage referral decisions, maintain authority frameworks, and partner with actuarial and finance for pricing consistency. Strategic Priorities : Create and execute a data strategy, prepare business cases for technology investment, modernize systems and workflows, map end‑to‑end SPC processes, and drive operating model efficiency. Leadership & Talent Management : Direct underwriting and referral resources, build a high‑performance culture, develop career progression and training programs, plan succession, and support performance management. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or related graduate degree preferred. 10+ years of commercial P&C insurance experience with underwriting and/or product leadership, including loss‑sensitive structures and/or alternative risk solutions; Captives experience preferred. Strong underwriting acumen, financial interpretation skills, and ability to influence across a matrixed organization. Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills. Leadership and mentoring experience in underwriting talent development. Preferred certifications: CPCU or other relevant industry designation. Compensation Annualized base pay range: $176,000 – $264,000. Base pay is one component of the total compensation package; additional rewards may include short‑term or annual bonuses, long‑term incentives, and on‑the‑spot recognition. Work Arrangement Hybrid or remote schedule. Candidates who live near an office are expected to work in the office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
