POSITION OVERVIEW
The Fiber Lineman is a skilled field professional responsible for the installation, splicing, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic cable systems in aerial and underground environments. The Mid‑Level Fiber Lineman works under general supervision on standard fiber placements, splicing, and OTDR/OLTS testing. The Senior Fiber Lineman independently leads complex splicing and placement tasks, mentors junior crew members, and serves as a technical resource on high‑count and mid‑sheath applications. Both levels operate in accordance with NESC standards, Dynetek safety protocols, and applicable federal and state regulations.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Responsibilities (All Levels) Install, splice, and terminate fiber optic cable in aerial, underground, and conduit environments Perform OTDR and OLTS testing to verify continuity, signal loss, and network performance Execute proper fiber cable handling, pulling, lashing, and tensioning techniques Prepare splice cases, closures, and vaults per project specifications Read and interpret construction drawings, splice diagrams, and as‑built documentation Operate aerial lift equipment, digger derricks, cable trailers, and other field machinery Perform make‑ready and pole attachment/transfer work as required Identify and troubleshoot fiber faults, signal degradation, and splice losses Maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in safe, clean operating condition Complete daily field documentation including timesheets, material logs, and job site reports Adhere to all OSHA, NESC, and company safety standards; participate in tailgate safety meetings Communicate professionally with customers, property owners, and inspectors on‑site Senior Fiber Lineman — Additional Responsibilities Lead and direct crew members during daily field operations; serve as working crew lead in Foreman's absence Execute complex, high‑count (144‑count and above) and mid‑sheath fiber splicing projects independently Develop and review splice plans, fiber routing diagrams, and closeout packages Train and mentor Apprentices and Mid‑Level Linemen on proper splicing techniques and safety practices Coordinate material staging, equipment logistics, and daily production sequencing Verify quality of work performed by crew members before project closeout Serve as a technical point of contact for project engineers and clients in the fieldREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Mid‑Level Fiber Lineman Minimum 2 years of hands‑on fiber optic installation and splicing experience in an outside plant (OSP) environment Demonstrated proficiency with fusion splicers (Fujikura, Sumitomo, or equivalent) Working knowledge of OTDR and OLTS test equipment and interpretation of test results Familiar with aerial and underground construction methods and NESC standards Valid driver's license; Class A or B CDL required, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 preferred Ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel to project sites as required Senior Fiber Lineman Minimum 5 years of progressive fiber optic installation and splicing experience, including OSP aerial and underground construction Advanced proficiency with high‑count fiber splicing, mid‑sheath entries, and mass fusion splicing Demonstrated ability to lead field crews and oversee daily production Strong working knowledge of NESC, NEC, and applicable utility standards Class A CDL required; ability to operate digger derricks and aerial lift equipment OSHA 30 certification required Proven track record of maintaining production quality and on‑schedule deliveryPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with ADSS, OPGW, or FTTH network construction Fiber‑to‑the‑Cell (FTTC) and 5G small cell installation experience First Aid / CPR certification Experience reading utility engineering plans and GIS mapping tools Prior work with investor‑owned utilities (IOUs) or electric cooperatives Experience in multi‑state or regional project deploymentsPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
