Job Title: Facilities Project Engineer

Job Description

The Facilities Project Engineer oversees the planning, design, and execution of mechanical and facility-related projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and in alignment with site requirements. This role designs and optimizes mechanical systems, manages building controls and facilities management systems across multiple sites, and provides technical leadership to engineers, contractors, and facilities associates. The position combines hands-on mechanical systems expertise with strong project management, communication, and documentation skills to support reliable, efficient facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and communicate clear operational plans for completing facility and mechanical projects, monitoring progress and performance against established project plans.
  • Resolve operational problems promptly, minimizing delays and identifying, developing, and securing the resources necessary to complete projects successfully.
  • Design mechanical systems and develop detailed project schedules, budgets, and forecasts, including the selection of materials, equipment, project staff, and contractors.
  • Estimate costs, resources, and time required to complete mechanical and facility-related projects and ensure adherence to budget and timeline commitments.
  • Create comprehensive scope documents based on unit and department project requirements to guide design, construction, and implementation activities.
  • Manage and support the bidding, evaluation, and selection process for contractors involved in the design and construction of facilities and department-led projects.
  • Create and maintain project budgets and ensure accuracy in investment prioritization worksheets used for company decision-making.
  • Supervise engineers and on-site contractors, providing direction, oversight, and support throughout project execution.
  • Generate and maintain project tracking documentation to monitor status, risks, and progress against milestones.
  • Determine and prioritize project tasks and develop detailed project schedules and timelines to achieve project goals on time and within budget.
  • Support the operation of facilities mechanical systems, including centrifugal fans, burners, cooling and heating coils, pumps, centrifugal air compressors, centrifugal chillers, and heat exchangers.
  • Manage and maintain documentation for site mechanical systems, ensuring information is current, accurate, and easily accessible.
  • Communicate critical updates and changes to site system operators to ensure safe and efficient operation of mechanical and control systems.
  • Manage Facilities Management System (FMS) and building controls specifications, design, and operations for multiple sites, ensuring consistent standards and performance.
  • Create planning documents for periodic budgeting and approval events, supporting long-term facility planning and investment decisions.
  • Direct and collaborate with site representatives to ensure consistency of controls architecture and optimal mechanical system performance across locations.
  • Present system updates, project status, and core functionality to site leaders and stakeholders in a clear, professional manner.
  • Manage periodic updates, upgrades, and maintenance activities for facility management systems and building controls.
  • Work with information technology teams to optimize the network infrastructure and manage server applications related to facility management and control systems.
  • Manage submission of yearly planning requirement documentation for facilities and mechanical systems.
  • Create roles and responsibility documents to support quick reference, clear ownership, and effective management of change within facilities operations.
  • Support facilities operations with mechanical and electrical equipment design and specification, ensuring compatibility with existing systems and operational needs.
  • Apply analytical and troubleshooting skills to minimize mean time to recovery for mechanical and control system issues.
  • Train facilities associates on operational enhancements related to controls and mechanical/electrical systems and provide ongoing support as needed.
  • Ensure reference documentation for mechanical systems, controls, and procedures is available, organized, and easily accessed by relevant personnel.
  • Analyze technology trends related to mechanical systems and building controls and ensure controls architecture consistency between sites.

Essential Skills

  • 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • 2–6 years of experience developing, coordinating, and managing mechanical and/or facility-related projects.
  • Strong subject matter knowledge of industrial mechanical systems, including HVAC, compressed air, potable water, and similar systems from concept through final design, implementation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Peripheral knowledge of electrical and structural systems related to a manufacturing facility.
  • Demonstrated project management experience in construction, construction management, and project coordination.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and technical information to gain consensus from individuals or teams.
  • Technical proficiency within mechanical systems and facilities engineering, with expertise in key topics in the area of specialization.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to comprehend technical drawings and specifications and translate them into actionable plans.
  • Ability to plan and execute special projects and reporting activities in a structured and organized manner.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with a strong customer focus and the ability to build productive relationships.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Working capability with AutoCAD for reviewing and supporting mechanical and facility design work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with facilities mechanical systems such as centrifugal fans, burners, cooling/heating coils, pumps, centrifugal air compressors, centrifugal chillers, and heat exchangers.
  • Experience with Facilities Management Systems (FMS) and building controls, including specification, design, operation, and optimization across multiple sites.
  • Ability to balance the wants and needs of customer departments with the requirements of facilities equipment and service teams.
  • Experience with project flow, budgeting, cost reporting, and project tracking and reporting for continuous improvement methodologies such as PDCA.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities to reduce downtime and improve system reliability.
  • Experience training facilities associates on controls and mechanical/electrical system enhancements.
  • Experience creating and maintaining roles and responsibility documents and reference documentation for mechanical and control systems.
  • Moderate physical capability to bend, crouch, push/pull equipment, reach, sit, stand, stoop, and walk as needed during site and equipment activities.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs with strong capability and up to 50 lbs with limited experience.
  • Nice-to-have experience in broader project management within mechanical systems and facilities environments.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily within a manufacturing or industrial facilities environment, with a strong focus on mechanical systems and building controls. The position involves regular interaction with mechanical equipment such as fans, burners, coils, pumps, compressors, chillers, and heat exchangers, as well as facilities management systems and building automation technologies. Work includes a mix of office-based tasks—such as planning, budgeting, documentation, and design using Microsoft Office and AutoCAD—and time spent in plant or facility areas overseeing installations, inspections, and troubleshooting. The role requires moderate levels of bending, crouching, reaching, standing, sitting, stooping, walking, and pushing or pulling equipment, as well as the ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs routinely and occasionally up to 50 lbs. The environment is generally not exposed to combustible liquids, compressed gases, extreme temperatures, or flammable gases as a normal part of the job. Typical working hours align with standard business operations, with flexibility as needed to support projects, system updates, and facility activities. Attire is expected to be appropriate for an industrial facility setting, including any required safety gear when working around mechanical equipment and in operational areas.

This is a Contract position based out of Lincoln, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
