Job Description Under direct supervision, is responsible for professional dental and managerial work of considerable difficulty in a public health clinic and performs related work as required. Responsibilities Department: Health Department Pay Grade: 115, Non-Exempt Starting hourly rate: $79.20 Minimum Experience: Graduation from an approved school of dentistry and currently licensed as a Dentist in the state of Tennessee.

- Dentist License with the Tennessee Department of Health Division of Health-Related Boards
- Must hold a valid Tennessee driver's license
- A pre-employment criminal background check is required.

Getting Information:
- Assess information from medical history, patient and/or parent or legal guardian and medical consults, concerning information as it relates to patient treatment.
- Obtain information from internal or external stakeholders/partners to develop, implement, and prioritize programs based on the information received.
- Uses professional judgment to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan for each patient.
- Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, or other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.
- Provides general dental services to patients to prevent or eliminate dental disease.
- Plan and coordinate public health dental programs and provide innovative leadership to improve oral health by utilizing scientifically proven methods to prevent dental disease.
- Responds to complaints, disputes and grievances and conflicts from internal and/or external sources to maintain a positive environment.
- Prioritizes and conducts tasks based on importance, urgency and other scheduled activities.
- Implements program standards, goals, objectives and guidelines.
- Develops rapport with participants, families, and community partners.
- Maintains professional working relationships with co-workers and community partners.
- Interacts with others and serves as a Health Department representative.
- Develops and maintains an ongoing working relationship with laboratories, health care providers and community-based organizations.
- Learns to review departmental policies and procedures to keep current of any changes, revisions or additions.
- Attends and completes all required training.
- Maintains continuing education (CEUs) as required by the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.
- Research the latest dental techniques, equipment and materials for dissemination and implementation to dental field personnel, thus providing technical support and/or supervision to staff.
- Accurately codes procedures for services performed to meet fiscal guidelines.
- Conducts appropriate monitoring of clinical service delivery in compliance with local, regional and state guidelines.
- Maintains positive, constructive and cooperative communication by telephone, in written form, in email or in person with supervisors and peers.
- Monitor inventory equipment and/or supplies to ensure the unit has the necessary equipment and/or supplies to perform functions.
- Submit request for expenditures to management for approval.
COUNTY ORGANIZATION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Represents and coordinates the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.
- Provides staff assistance to the Department Director; serves as an advisor and resource to Department personnel.
- Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ACTIVITIES:
- This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Vocal communication and normal hearing are required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in person, via the phone, at meetings and to greet and assist visitors.
- Use and normal maintenance of office machines, (copier, computer, printer, etc.).
- Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks.
- Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
- Work frequently requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- May be subject to exposure to infectious wastes, diseases, and medical conditions.
- Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
