Water Project Director — Lead Multi‑Million Infrastructure

Project Director - Water Business Date: May 20, 2026 Location: Des Moines, IA, US Company: Black & Veatch Family of Companies The Opportunity The Project Director is a high‑profile leadership role in Black & Veatch’s Water & Wastewater business, responsible for managing successful delivery of multi‑million‑dollar water infrastructure projects. The Team Black & Veatch’s Governments & Communities sector focuses on municipal, state and local government infrastructure. The Project Director partners with clients to modernize water infrastructure, optimize asset use and reduce costs. Prospect identification, proposal development, preparation, client presentations, project budgeting and contracting for successful opportunities Accountable for new business objectives and overall project performance Project Management External focus: interact with assigned clients and promote Black & Veatch through client and community activities Support development of the market business plan, strategies, and client engagement tactics Oversight of engineering manager(s) Development and accountability for implementation of project performance goals Active involvement with internal project team and owner project representatives on project activities Perform or assist with performance and commercial management: budgeting, invoicing, payments; lead project performance reviews Staff Management Team development, mentoring and coaching for performance improvement Recommendations for training, promotion of assigned professionals and identification of new candidates Preferred Qualifications 15+ years business development and project management experience Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline Professional Engineering License Proven technical understanding of Wastewater and Water markets, including drivers and general trends Strong sales traits, tenacity and competitiveness Strong interpersonal skills; adept at working in a team environment Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proposal and presentation skills Ability to interface with diverse personalities and think strategically to create persuasive messages Contract negotiating skills including knowledge of terms, risks, pricing, and payment terms Understanding of budgets and financial metrics Self‑starter and ability to make decisions independently Ability to meet deadlines and be flexible to multiple demands of project teams and shifting priorities; problem‑solving and leadership skills Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records, etc.) Work Environment / Physical Demands Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days based on manager discretion Typical office and construction environment with potential exposure to extreme weather, high noise, safety hazards, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation; may involve standing, walking, talking, writing, driving, lifting up to 40 pounds Salary Plan PMT: Project Management Job Grade 020 Benefits Competitive compensation, 401(k) match and benefits starting day one.
