You’ll combine deep analytics, strong fraud intuition, and cross-functional leadership to identify emerging threats, design effective controls, and balance loss prevention with customer experience and growth.This is a highly visible role for someone who wants to move beyond investigating individual cases and build the systems, strategies, and analytical frameworks that determine how a growing fintech manages fraud at scale.Work Location: This role is based in the Bay Area and involves a hybrid work approach, balancing in-office collaboration with the ability to work remotely.To support our team, we offer:Commuter benefits to ease your travelLunches and snacks to keep you fueledA collaborative, high-growth environment where you’ll work closely with talented teammates across the companyExpectations (In this role, you will):Own and evolve fraud strategies across Mudflap’s payments products, including fleet card and legacy payment productsIdentify emerging fraud patterns and translate insights into scalable rules, controls, and policiesPartner with Data Science to develop, evaluate, and improve fraud detection modelsUse SQL, Python, and advanced analytics to uncover fraud trends, vulnerabilities, and opportunitiesDefine fraud KPIs, loss thresholds, and monitoring frameworks tied to risk appetite and unit economicsBuild dashboards and reporting that surface emerging risks and measure strategy effectivenessPartner with Product and Engineering to embed fraud controls into new products and customer experiencesEvaluate and implement third-party fraud tools, data sources, and detection capabilitiesDevelop fraud strategies that enable safe expansion into new payment rails, including ACHBalance fraud prevention, customer friction, growth, and profitability as Mudflap scalesExperience (What we look for):5+ years of experience in fraud strategy, risk, or payments, ideally within fintech or a high-volume payments businessHands-on experience developing and optimizing fraud strategies, including rules, controls, monitoring, and loss managementStrong analytical skills with advanced SQL; proficiency with Python and spreadsheets preferredExperience analyzing transaction data to identify fraud patterns, vulnerabilities, and root causesStrong judgment balancing fraud loss, customer friction, growth, and profitabilityExperience partnering with Data Science, Product, Engineering, and Operations to implement fraud solutionsFamiliarity with card payments, ACH, digital payments, or other complex payment ecosystemsAbility to turn ambiguous data into clear recommendations and actionHigh ownership, curiosity, and comfort operating in a fast-changing environmentPerks and Benefits (What we offer):Competitive salary and equity in a high-growth startupMultiple health benefit optionsResponsible Time Off401(k) matchingOpportunities and support for major career growthAnnual Company offsite event (Mudfest!)The base salary range for this role is $145,000 - $195,000.
