POSITION SUMMARY

The Biology Laboratory Manager will order, stock, and inventory chemicals, glassware, equipment, and supplies. Train and supervise student laboratory assistants. Prepare solutions, media, dyes, and other laboratory materials for various biology and related courses. Perform routine maintenance of equipment, checking for proper operation, replacement of parts, and troubleshooting. Contact and coordinate equipment repair when external repair personnel are necessary. Support faculty research projects through ordering and preparing materials. May assist faculty in development of new experiments from concepts to implementation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Inventory stock/prep/storage rooms, and develop/keep computerized record of supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  2. Order and stock laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment.
  3. Prepare solutions, specimens, and materials for labs.
  4. Hire, organize, and supervise Student Lab Assistants; submit evaluations, time sheets, etc.
  5. Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  6. Coordinate equipment repair with external service providers.
  7. Order and coordinate material for student research projects.
  8. Maintain general appearance and operation of labs, prep, and storage rooms.
  9. May assist faculty in development of new lab experiments & procedures.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules.
  • Ability to weigh and measure solid and liquid chemicals.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, procedure manuals, and charts to solve practical problems and/or ensure compliance with clear guidelines and standards.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to supervise students effectively.
  • Ability to handle and culture organisms for laboratory and research purposes.
Non-Technical Skills & Competencies
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse student populations and a wide variety of co-workers.
  • Ability to manage interpersonal conflict situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and courteous manner with a variety of people including students, employees, faculty, vendors, and the general public.
  • Support of the University's mission.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related discipline required. Master's degree in Biology or related discipline preferred.
  • Some experience in biological laboratory operation (preparation of solutions and media, autoclave operation, handling of specimens, and various physiological data acquisition equipment) is necessary.
  • Perform word-processing, spreadsheet, and database operations.
Workplace Factors
  • Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Frequent exposure to risk of biological and chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards and electrical shock.
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a lab setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds; to operate office and scientific equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard.
