SUPERVISING MEDICOLEGAL INVESTIGATOR (SR-26) [1 vacancy]

Position Overview Department of the Medical Examiner (MED) is seeking a Supervising Medicolegal Investigator in Honolulu. The role leads and supervises investigative staff in the investigation of violent, suspicious, and unexplained deaths under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner’s Office. Responsibilities include ensuring adherence to professional standards, coordinating with executive and forensic leadership, conducting and overseeing complex and high‑profile medicolegal death investigations, and mentoring, training, and evaluating subordinate personnel. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Supervision: Leads and supervises investigative personnel conducting medicolegal death investigations involving violent, suspicious, accidental, and unexplained deaths. Ensures compliance with professional standards, legal requirements, and departmental policies while mentoring, training, and evaluating staff. Investigation Oversight & Case Management: Oversees and participates in complex and high‑profile death investigations, including jurisdiction determinations, scene response, evidence control, decedent identification, next‑of‑kin notification, and preparation and review of comprehensive investigative reports. Operations & Administrative Management: Manages scheduling, report quality assurance, personnel actions, policy development, payroll and time review, safety oversight, and resource management to ensure effective and accountable section operations. Interagency Coordination & Public Communication: Coordinates with local, state, federal, military, and international agencies; provides court testimony; supports mass fatality and emergency response planning; and serves as a liaison to the public and media to maintain transparency and public trust. Perform other related duties as required. Special Work Requirements Health hazards: Exposure to contagious diseases including hepatitis and meningitis; exposure to chemical and gaseous environments during investigations. Unpleasantness: Enclosed areas, decomposed bodies, putrid odors, insects, larvae, and animal vectors. Physical hazards: Contact with remote sites such as cliffs, valleys, ravines, burial caves; entry into smoldering dwellings, construction sites, and traffic scenes; handling vehicles; lifting 40‑50 pounds. Education Requirements Equivalent to graduation from a regionally accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field. Experience Requirements Four years of progressively responsible professional experience in conducting medicolegal investigations, two of which shall have been representative of the journey level or higher. Experience must also include or be supplemented by work experience demonstrating aptitude or potential for supervisory duties through successful completion of assignments that involve supervisory responsibilities. License and Certificate Requirements Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license (Type 3/automobile). Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) as a Registered Diplomate (certification must be maintained on a current basis thereafter). Salary and Benefits Actual salary will be commensurate with applicable experience, pending approval. Relocation incentive may be available.
