About the Team
The Notifications team is a core platform team and the backbone for all communication across the company - every email, SMS, push, and in-app inbox notification flows through our infrastructure, making us integral to the entire organization's operations. We're now expanding that mission into AI: building intelligent, agent-driven experiences on top of our platform that bring automation and conversational capabilities to how Paylocity engages its users. It's an exciting time to join - the AI side of our work is growing fast, and engineers joining now get to help shape a platform that's still taking form.

Our team spans two regions - the Czech Republic and the United States - with two engineers based in CZ, three in the US, plus a dedicated QA engineer and product owner. This distribution gives us excellent coverage, with most on-call responsibilities falling within standard CZ or US business hours. Our architecture centers on a microservices approach - numerous AWS Lambda functions subscribing to message queues - with a React-based frontend layer, ensuring efficient, resilient processing at scale, and increasingly leveraging AWS AI services to power new agentic capabilities.

Position Overview
The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on role focused on building and maintaining our platform - writing code, specifying and refining stories, and collaborating closely with product and other engineering teams. You'll work alongside a team of experienced engineers, owning features end-to-end and contributing to the technical direction of a platform that's actively evolving toward AI- and agent-based capabilities.

Core Responsibilities

• Architect and implement modular, maintainable, event-driven software solutions that optimize for performance and scalability
• Help shape feature and epic design, writing clear specifications and stories in collaboration with product and cross-functional teams
• Help design and integrate AI and agent-based capabilities into the platform, applying them pragmatically to real product problems
• Contribute to technical decisions with consideration for business objectives and customer needs
• Identify and resolve technical ambiguities through systematic analysis and collaboration
• Own medium to large-scale projects from conception to delivery, requiring minimal supervision
• Coordinate across teams to identify and manage technical dependencies
• Break down work and plan delivery in line with business objectives
• Maintain high-quality standards while meeting project timelines
• Champion best practices in software development, testing, and deployment
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and monitoring systems
• Provide detailed, actionable code reviews that enhance overall code quality
• Drive technical debt reduction initiatives and refactor legacy code

• Resolve conflicts independently when possible, escalating appropriately when needed

Education and Experience

• Several years of professional software engineering experience
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Collaborative mindset with ability to influence peers
• Adaptable approach to changing requirements and priorities

Technical Skills

• Solid hands-on professional backend development experience, able to contribute at a senior level
• Strong experience with .NET / C# (preferred) or a comparable modern, object-oriented backend stack
• Deep understanding of modern API and backend system design (REST, authentication, authorization, versioning, scalability)
• Experience designing and operating event-driven, distributed systems - message queues, pub/sub, serverless (e.g. AWS Lambda)
• Experience with databases such as DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB, including data modeling and performance tuning
• Proven experience designing and implementing testable systems - unit tests, integration tests, and automated test strategies
• Strong grasp of system architecture principles, reliability, and long-term maintainability
• Ability to own backend components or services end-to-end: design, implementation, and operation
• Some hands-on experience with frontend development (React), or a willingness to work across the stack when needed
• Ability to work effectively in an agile, cross-functional, English-speaking team across CZ and US

Nice to have

• Experience building or integrating AI-powered features - LLMs, agentic systems, RAG, or AWS AI services
• Familiarity with cloud services (AWS preferred)
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
• Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools (Datadog, Prometheus, etc.)
• Experience with distributed systems or data-intensive platforms

Physical requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7-8 hours a day.
• Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.
