POSITION INFORMATION The Placer County District Attorney’s Office is opening Deputy District Attorney positions at four levels: I, II, III, and IV. Positions are posted for the calendar year with a continuous recruitment that remains open until the final filing date, whichever occurs first. Applicants must submit separate applications for each level and be listed on the eligible list until the end of the calendar year. The first round of application screening occurs on 5:00 PM, January 22, 2026, with subsequent reviews on a bi‑weekly basis. DEFINITION Perform professional legal work within the District Attorney’s Office; prepare and present civil and criminal cases in court; and perform related work as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Deputy District Attorney I is the entry level with no prior legal experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while gaining experience. Higher levels are acquired based on experience, skill, and discretion of the appointing authority. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Immediate supervision from a Supervising Deputy District Attorney or other management staff; technical and functional supervision from higher level Deputy District Attorneys. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES Perform the full range of legal activities involving the investigation or prosecution of complex criminal or civil cases. Prepare and present cases in court, including pleadings, briefs, warrants, and other legal documents. Interview witnesses and complainants; subpoena witnesses; review reports filed by arresting officers. Analyze, interpret and apply laws, court decisions and legal authorities in case preparation. Cooperate with law enforcement agencies and investigate further evidence when necessary. Carry out additional duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Experience and Training Any combination of experience and training that provides required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. No prior experience is required. Training – Demonstrate eligibility to take the California Bar Examination per Section 6060 of the California Business and Professions Code. Required License or Certificate Active membership in the California State Bar by the date of appointment. Valid driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance may be required. Medical clearance may also be required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Legal principles and practices, including civil, criminal, constitutional law and related procedures. Rules of Court, Evidence Code, and legal research methods. Ability to: Investigate and prosecute criminal and civil law complaints. Analyze and apply legal principles, facts and precedents to legal problems. Prepare and present cases effectively in written and oral form. Work under time constraints and exacting professional standards. Maintain ethical standards and professional conduct. SELECTION PROCEDURE Training & Experience Rating (100%) based on supplemental questionnaire responses, education, training, and experience. Scores determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list. CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT Applicants must undergo fingerprinting, medical examination (including drug screening), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to work. Background investigations may include credit checks and polygraph tests. Positions requiring law enforcement functions or access to Medi‑Cal billing software must complete additional security verifications.
