Technology Specialist

Under the direction of the assigned manager provide technical support for all aspects of computer and audio/video use. The Technology Specialist is responsible for supporting the needs of users of District computer systems, hardware and software, and audio/visual equipment and software.

Responsibilities

Serves as primary contact for all computer users regarding problems, concerns and questions about their hardware and software and the resolution of those problems, concerns and questions.

Maintains an inventory of all computer, hardware, software and audio/video equipment in use by the District.

Maintains file and records relating to user inquiries, problem calls, and/or repairs.

Provides recommendations concerning enhancements to computer hardware, software and audio/video inventory.

Provides assistance to users of software, computer & audio/video equipment.

Prepares and submits accurate plans for completion of assigned duties.

Remains knowledgeable about all aspects of computing and audio/video technology and applications, especially as it relates to higher education.

Participates in in service training for computer and audio/video systems.

Maintains friendly and supportive atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and the public.

Collaborates with other district personnel in the development of computer, audio/video and network Configurations.

Assists District personnel with budgeting for computer and audio/video equipment as well as hardware and software acquisitions and support.

Works with advisory groups and/or other staff to develop standards and procedures for the implementation and support of computer hardware and software, audio/video and network systems.

Performs technology research.

Identifies, structure and implement computer and audio/video support services. Maintain a high level of confidentiality when exposed to confidential information in the performance of duties.

• An associate's degree in Electronics, Engineering or Computer Science or related field AND
• Two years professional experience using various computer operating systems applications software and hardware including experience in local area network environments and audio/video systems or any combination of training, experience, and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Demonstrated Knowledge:

• Knowledge of an in-depth understanding of the hardware evaluation process, an in-depth understanding of software evaluation, selection, installation and testing processes; superior verbal and written communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and others.
• Knowledge of analog and digital electronics theory and practices.
• Basic knowledge of theory and operation of communications systems, LAN hardware and software and tasks associates with LAN administration.
• Knowledge of various computer operating systems and application software) and the operations of various computers and their components/peripheral devices.
• Knowledge of repair and troubleshooting procedures for computers, printers, monitors, LAN's and WAN's, audio/video equipment and all associated accessories.
• Basic knowledge of commonly used computer networking systems to include the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of such networks.
• Knowledge of hardware and software evaluation process, selection, installation and testing procedures.
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to relate to persons with diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including the disabled.
• Remain informed of emerging technologies.
• Ability to use logical methods to evaluate varying technologies.
• Ability to use appropriate testing equipment and/or software.
• Ability to use hand tools as required to perform job duties.
• Ability to identify and repair faults to the board level.
• Ability to arrange for off?site computer and audio/video equipment repairs, when necessary.

Language Skills:

• Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
• Ability to write original material for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format, such as user documentation and procedures.
• Ability to prepare clear, concise and complete statistical reports.
• Ability to communicate with district faculty, staff and students as well as outside vendors to define and clarify the requirements for telecommunications, networking and data communications hardware and software and problem resolution.

Mathematical Skills:

• Ability to demonstrate knowledge of algebra and discrete mathematics.
• Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to understand and analyze user requirements.
• Ability to design, plan, develop and recommend appropriate solutions to district computer needs and to provide technical expertise

Certificates, Licenses,Registration:

• Valid California driver's license.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties in this classification, the employee in this classification is regularly required to sit for prolonged periods of time, use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines and computer equipment, reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel or crouch to file and perform other tasks, speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; and hear and understand voices over telephones and in person. An employee in this classification is frequently required to travel to other locations to conduct work.
• An employee assigned to this classification must regularly lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. An employee must occasionally lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities require for positions assigned to this classification include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

Work Environment:

• The work assigned to this classification is typically performed in a computer center environment. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee regularly works at a computer terminal and keyboard for long periods of time and is exposed to the hazards of working with video display terminals. The work environment involves frequent interruptions, fast paced deadlines and multiple priorities and is moderately noisy. Duties may require the employee to work at nonconventional times as necessary.
