Job Summary The role mandates the inspection, investigation, and monitoring of businesses and citizens to enforce compliance with air pollution and environmental laws and regulations. Responsibilities include issuing extensions, exemptions, warnings, citations, and serving warrants and summons for violations. The position requires thorough correspondence, record-keeping, sampling, evidence collection, courtroom testimony, and public outreach to foster compliance. Responsibilities Inspect and investigate air pollution violations, including asbestos demolition and renovation sites. Grant extensions, exemptions, and issue warnings and citations to citizens and businesses. Serve warrants and summons related to violations of air pollution standards. Prepare correspondence and inspection reports, maintaining accurate records and files. Collect samples, compile evidence, and testify in court and pre‑trial conferences. Provide information to the public concerning procedures for air pollution compliance. Obtain permits, monitor, and audit asbestos contractors for compliance requirements. Investigate community complaints regarding air pollution and observe emissions from various sources. Conduct emissions monitoring of ambient air, open burning, area and stationary sources, small businesses, and equipment. Identify and investigate sources of excessive visible pollutants and other suspect air pollution. Monitor and audit businesses for regulatory compliance. Investigate and respond to complaints relating to open burning. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Communications, Environmental Science, Geology, Mathematics, Meteorology, Physics, Social Science, or a related field. Regular and punctual attendance with willingness to perform related work including mandatory overtime. Other Minimum Requirements Must provide own source of transportation. Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must not have been convicted of a felony. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must be eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer. For asbestos abatements, must submit to an annual pulmonary medical exam. Equivalency Environmental investigation and enforcement experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education, up to a maximum of two years. Special Requirements Must possess a Certificate in Visible Emission Evaluation issued by the State of Kentucky or obtain it within six months of employment.
