Position Summary
The Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, clinical quality, staffing, and patient care delivery within a hospital department or nursing unit. This leadership role ensures high standards of patient care, regulatory compliance, employee engagement, and operational efficiency while supporting organizational goals and patient satisfaction initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Supervise and support nursing staff in delivering safe, high-quality patient care
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards
- Monitor patient outcomes and implement quality improvement initiatives
- Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for nursing staff
- Promote evidence-based nursing practices and patient safety standards
Staff Management
- Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and evaluate nursing personnel
- Develop staffing schedules and ensure appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and corrective action when needed
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment
- Support employee engagement, retention, and professional development initiatives
Operational & Financial Oversight
- Manage departmental budgets, labor productivity, and supply utilization
- Monitor overtime, staffing metrics, and operational efficiencies
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve workflow and patient throughput
- Participate in strategic planning and departmental goal setting
- Ensure accurate documentation and compliance with hospital reporting standards
Patient & Family Relations
- Address patient and family concerns in a timely and professional manner
- Promote exceptional patient experience and service excellence
- Support patient education and discharge planning initiatives
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in applicable state
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; MSN preferred
- 3–5+ years of acute care nursing experience
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of hospital operations, patient care standards, and regulatory requirements
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Proficiency with EMR systems and healthcare technology
Preferred Certifications
- BLS and ACLS certifications
- Nurse Leadership certification preferred
- Specialty certification related to assigned unit preferred
Work Environment
- Hospital inpatient or specialty care setting
- Fast-paced clinical environment requiring strong decision-making and multitasking abilities
