Addiction Medicine Provider
Provides comprehensive addiction and family medicine services within the scope of training and experience to people of all ages and genders.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job
- Provides comprehensive addiction medicine services under the direction of the medical director, including, but not limited to, diagnosis, treatment, education, coordination of care, referral, preventative care, harm reduction, and health maintenance to a dedicated panel of patients.
- When indicated, performs brief medical care, including history and physicals and established care follow up medical visits for assigned clinics within the scope of training and experience.
- Utilizes motivational interviewing and other engagement and rapport-building techniques to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Provides addiction medicine consultation and support for SEARHC colleagues across the consortium.
- Is readily available to engage patients promptly into services.
- Maintains access and productivity expectations in alignment with assigned clinics and communities.
- Supports, encourages, and teaches patients how to adjust to life without drugs and to maintain recovery.
- Provides optimal patient experience using strong listening and communication skills.
- Builds long-term patient care relationships.
- Assists patient to become independent and meet personal goals.
- Works alongside an interdisciplinary team to discuss, assess, and resolve patient issues collaboratively and professionally.
- Participates fully in shared local urgent/emergent care on-call rotation.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation of services in accordance with SEARHC policy.
- Consults SEARHC physician as needed for patient care and uses other access to specialists as needed (i.e., AristaMD, ANMC providers, etc.).
- Provides medical services at facilities within the SEARHC care network and other facilities and locations listed in SEARHC's compact and funding agreement with the Indian Health Service.
- Actively participates in SEARHC quality patient care initiatives and quality assurance programs.
- Actively participates in provider meetings, clinic meetings, and SEARHC medical staff functions.
Other Functions
- Depending upon the location and needs of the community served, participates in shared after-hours emergency call coverage.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
- State of Alaska Medical License as an NP or PA
- Board-certified in specialty by accrediting body
- Maintains active, unrestricted DEA registration.
- Maintains active SEARHC medical staff privileges.
- BLS required.
Experience Required
- Two years of experience as a practicing provider
- One year experience working with substance use disorders/addiction medicine
- Additional clinical experience or training prior to practice as a licensed provider may be considered by the Medical Director of Primary Care Clinics to meet this minimum experience requirement.
Knowledge of
- Primary health care, addiction medicine practices, principles, and interventions
- Basic emergency care and protocol where appropriate
- Common disease processes and pharmacology
- Standards of care, EMTALA, HIPAA, health care risk management principles, medical ethics, and medical malpractice principles
Skills in
- Effective communication skill and ability (including motivational interviewing) to interact with staff and patients
- Operating essential basic medical equipment
- Making proper assessments based upon history, exam, lab, x-ray, and other data.
- Incorporating health promotion, health prevention, and harm reduction strategies into patient care
- Educating patients and family members about diagnoses, treatment plan alternatives, risks, options, and medications
- Providing high-quality health care services including the performance of medical procedures appropriate to the outpatient and emergency care setting
Ability to
- Promote teamwork and collaboration.
- Become proficient in POC testing and serum lab draws.
- Resolve conflict.
- Efficiently utilize electronic medical record and other clinically required technology.
- Carefully listen to patients and family members.
- Clearly express ideas through oral and written communication.
- Efficiently analyze complex situations and solve problems.
- Effectively implement clinical program strategies.
Required Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association
