Staff Accountant

Pay: $30 to $50 per hour, based on experience and qualifications
Schedule: Full-time, four-day workweek
Job Type: Direct hire
Location: Humboldt County area
Work Arrangement: Primarily in person, with potential for a hybrid schedule after successful completion of the probationary period

About the Opportunity

A well-established accounting firm is seeking an experienced Staff Accountant to provide accounting and tax preparation services for individual and business clients. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who values accuracy, responsive client service, and a healthy work-life balance.

The firm offers competitive compensation, a four-day workweek, and a comprehensive benefits package. A CPA license or Enrolled Agent designation is preferred but not required. Strong accounting and tax preparation experience will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities

• Review client accounting records, reconcile accounts, and resolve discrepancies
• Prepare adjusting journal entries, trial balances, and financial statements
• Complete month-end and year-end accounting work
• Account for fixed assets, depreciation, accruals, and other financial activity
• Prepare federal and state tax returns for:
  • Individuals
  • Corporations
  • S corporations
  • Partnerships
  • Trusts
• Prepare tax workpapers and reconcile accounting records to tax returns
• Communicate with clients to obtain information and clarify transactions
• Assist with estimated tax calculations and tax research
• Help prepare responses to tax notices
• Maintain accurate, organized workpapers
• Manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines
• Provide professional, responsive service to clients

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent relevant experience
• At least two years of accounting and tax preparation experience
• Experience working in a CPA or public accounting firm is preferred
• Working knowledge of accounting principles and individual and business taxation
• QuickBooks proficiency
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Commitment to high-quality client service
• Ability to work in person during the initial employment period

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA license, Enrolled Agent designation, or progress toward certification
• Experience with CCH ProSystem fx Tax
• Experience with CCH ProSystem fx Engagement
• Experience with Karbon
• Previous experience preparing a variety of individual and business tax returns
