Surgical Technician

Job Description JOB SUMMARY The Surgical Technician at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for preparing surgical procedures by selecting supplies, instruments, and equipment, performing surgical counts, maintaining sterile techniques, assisting surgeons, and decontaminating clinical equipment. The role enforces safety measures, ensures compliance with policies and regulations, and manages physical tasks such as lifting, pushing/pulling, sitting, walking, bending, and reaching. Good communication, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to handle stress in a dynamic environment are required. JOB FUNCTIONS Procedure preparation: use preference lists to select supplies, instruments, and equipment. Surgical counts: perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the RN circulator per hospital policy. Sterile technique: maintain sterility of the operating field and prevent contamination. Surgeon assistant: as a scrubbed team member, hand instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, dressings, and other items as needed. Clinical equipment: decontaminate, clean, and sterilize instruments for reuse in accordance with policy. Performance maintenance: attend required in‑service, annual review, and competency education programs. Daily assignments: restock supplies and turnaround the operating room for the next use. QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent (required). Licenses and Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Certified Pulmonary Resuscitation/Basic Life Support. Work Experience: 1–3 years in surgical technology or related field. Competent to provide care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. File, answer phones, schedule appointments, and use Excel and Word; comply with reports. Primary accountability for assisting surgeons as a “scrubbed” team member. Perform under RN supervision for handling instruments and counts. Organize and prioritize work assignments. Interact daily with patients, central sterile processing, O.R. staff, and surgeons. Maintain good communication skills and a positive, caring attitude toward customers and co‑workers. Maintain composure in a stressful environment. Provide information regarding instruments, equipment, and sterilization techniques.
