Equipment Operator II

Job Title

Under general direction, operates heavy construction and maintenance equipment in support of a variety of activities including excavating, grading, loading, transporting, and related operations; oversees the work of maintenance workers assigned; performs activities and duties related to the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.

Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the assumed responsibility level and the complexity of the duties assigned. Incumbents must be fully trained in all procedures related to the Public Works Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.

• Perform a variety of construction and maintenance activities and duties in the completion of the services and operations of the Street division of the Public Works Department; work with department crews as assigned by supervisory personnel.
• Operate heavy construction equipment such as the rubber tire loader; motor grader; bulldozer, dump truck, backhoe, and other large and complex heavy construction equipment in support of a variety of maintenance and construction operations.
• Operate various equipment in the grading of streets, pouring of concrete, spreading of asphalt, and other street maintenance tasks.
• Transport and deliver equipment and supplies to/from construction sites; perform preventive maintenance tasks on equipment and vehicles including cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting.
• Maintain records and logs of all work performed; perform the duties of an equipment operator when required.
• Trim trees and haul brush to the landfill; operate heavy equipment to upkeep landfill including brush pile; operate various equipment to clean ditches.
• Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
• Respond to public inquiries courteously; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a streets maintenance program; methods and techniques of heavy construction equipment operation; pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations; basic principles and procedures of record keeping; operations, services, and activities of the city; traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operations; methods, materials, techniques, and equipment used in the minor maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment; safe handling of traffic in a construction zone; operational characteristics of heavy construction equipment and tools; occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to operate a variety of heavy construction equipment safely and effectively; interpret, explain, and enforce department policies and procedures; perform heavy labor as needed; follow all safety rules and regulations of the City of Waxahachie; work independently in the absence of supervision; interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Requirements

Education, Training, and Experience: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Three years of increasingly responsible construction site operations experience. Two years of direct heavy construction equipment experience.

Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License Class "CDL-B" and good driving record as defined by City policy. State of Texas Driver's License Class "CDL-A" preferred.
