Job Title: Emergency Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Department Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 7PM - 7:30AM Hours per Shift: 12.5 Experience: Minimum 2 years of direct pediatric emergency department experience License: NYS RN License Certifications: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required Must-Have: BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Minimum 2 years of Emergency Medicine experience (adults and/or pediatrics) Description: The Emergency Nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse responsible for providing safe, competent quality care based on nursing theory and research to a designated group of patients and their significant others. Delivers patient care by incorporating the tenets of the professional practice model of Relationship Centered Care. Utilizes the nursing process based on theory, research, evidence-based practice, and approved organizational nursing standards. Assesses and evaluates patient care needs while applying critical thinking skills in patient care management. Integrates relevant assessment and intervention skills in the delivery of nursing care. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care. Prioritizes all aspects of patient care, including teaching, rounding, coaching, and planning for post-hospital care. Educates patients and caregivers about their plan of care, transition of care, promotion of health, and prevention of disease. Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, families, and all members of the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team. Manages assignments within the Care Delivery Model and demonstrates effective allocation of material resources. Role models the tenets of Relationship Centered Care through various patient-centered actions. Considers the patient’s values, preferences, cultural diversity, expressed needs, and knowledge in all aspects of care. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients and families. Uses evidence-based practices to enhance understanding of patients' perceptions of care. Initiates service recovery for patients and family members who have concerns. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening. Supports staff in using evidence-based practices to improve understanding of patients' perceptions of care. Conducts Purposeful Hourly Rounding on assigned patients addressing essential needs. Practices safe and efficient patient-centered care, identifying and escalating barriers. Demonstrates clinical skills and knowledge crucial to quality and safety in the patient population served. Implements process improvement strategies based on institutional and evidence-based standards. Engages in formal and informal peer and institutional review processes. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to create and implement quality improvement projects and nursing research studies. Contributes to quality and safety practices and required compliance measures. Implements principles of high reliability to provide a safe environment for patients. Escalates potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice following institutional protocols. Utilizes institutional information technology for documenting nursing practice to support quality and performance improvement initiatives. Performs charge nurse duties as assigned. Coordinates with management to ensure supplies are appropriately utilized. Escalates material or staffing resource deficits to the appropriate management. Demonstrates patient-focused and cost-effective approaches to patient care. Documents accurately and thoroughly in compliance with regulatory standards. Facilitates patient throughput on a shift basis. Contributes to the environment of care to support clinical colleagues, patients, and their families. Advances clinical competence in nursing practice. Projects a professional image and communicates with respect and compassion. Incorporates ethical principles into decision-making for patients and families. Encourages a spirit of scholarship, inquiry, lifelong learning, and innovation. Acquires knowledge and skills relative to the role and patient population. Participates in shared decision-making through specialty practice councils and unit initiatives.
