Assistant Swim Team Coach

Overview Job Title: Assistant Swim Team Coach Branch: Oakbrook/Downtown FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (hourly) Part-Time Reports to: Aquatics Director/Head Swim Team Coach Job: Starting pay $12.27 Under the general direction of the Aquatics Director and Co-Head Coaches, the Assistant Swim Team Coach is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the Competitive Swimming Program in accordance with the YMCA philosophy, USA Swimming policies, Aquatic Guidelines, and YMCA Competitive Sports Guidelines. The Assistant Coach provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation to swim team participants while ensuring a safe, positive, and inclusive environment. This role requires regular attendance at practices, meets, and team functions throughout the year. The Assistant Swim Team will also work closely with swimmers, parents, YMCA aquatics staff, and volunteer committees, and represents the YMCA in a positive and professional manner within the community, at swim meets, and in all program-related interactions. Minimum Requirements The Assistant Swim Team Coach requires a broad background in aquatics and competitive swimming. He or She must have communication skills and organizational ability. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with the swimming program by performing coaching duties as directed by the Head Coach. The employee is required to take all Redwoods & Praesidium courses online prior to actively working in their role. Qualifications Current certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid and Safety, and CPR. Completion of Safety Training for Swim Coaches (available online through the American Red Cross at americanredcross.org). YMCA Competitive Swimming & Diving certification (account required at yexchange.org; must complete both the online portion and workbook). USA Swimming Coach Certification within six months of hire. USA Swimming Safe Sport, USADA, Concussion, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest certifications. Previous coaching experience with competitive or age-group swimmers preferred. Strong knowledge of stroke technique, training methods, and competitive swimming rules. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to engage, motivate, and support swimmers of all ages and abilities. Assist in the development and delivery of the swim team program consistent with YMCA standards. Organize, promote, and help implement seasonal clinics such as the Spring and Summer Stroke Clinics. Lead structured practices during Fall, Winter, and Summer seasons, including recording workouts, tracking attendance, and maintaining team records. Collaborate with the parent committee to secure sponsorships and plan fundraising events. Assist the Co-Head Coaches with administrative matters related to team operations, meet logistics, and team performance, and communicate with parents as needed. Attend and actively participate in swim team events such as meets, parent meetings, and social activities. Foster positive relationships with parents to create a collaborative and supportive team environment. Contribute to the planning and execution of swim team social events. Ensure the safety of all swimmers during practices, competitions, and team functions. Attend required aquatics staff meetings and trainings. Must be available Monday through Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and weekends for swim meets and team functions. Assume responsibility for all practice and on-deck operations in the absence of the Co-Head Coaches, ensuring continuity of leadership and program delivery. Safety Policy The Assistant Coach will be responsible for observing the following rules. No Alcohol or drugs will be used on the job at any time. Report all job accidents the same day the accident happens. Obtain authorization from your supervisor for all non-emergency treatments for accidents. Wear seat belts at all times in company vehicles Keep the area where you work clean and neat at all times. Do not remove or bypass any guards on any machinery at any time. Ask you supervisor when you need additional equipment or instructions to get the job done safely. Lift with your legs, not your back, and get assistance with loads over 50 pounds. Advise your supervisor of any hazardous conditions. Follow all other written and spoken safety rules. Effect on End Result Growth in swimmer development, both in skills and character. Introductory Period A 90-day review will be conducted after the employee start date.
