About the Position

Job Title: Operating Room Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Operating Room / Scrub Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Days, Monday - Thursday Hours per Shift: 9 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active RN license required upon hire Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire; Advanced Life Support (ACLS) certification within one year of hire Must-Have: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with an Associate's, Diploma, or BSN degree; basic computer skills Description: Provides direct patient care to neonate through geriatric patient populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with the surgical team continuously and as needed concerning patient condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Participates in performance improvement activities. Assesses the operating room for equipment functioning and readiness. Obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of the surgical operating team are met. Continuously acts as patient advocate throughout the perioperative phases of care. Duties/Responsibilities: Follows and supports the policies, mission, vision, and values of the organization. Performs patient duties in pre-operative, intra-operative, PACU, and post-operative areas. Adapts nursing procedures to meet the needs for treatment of individual patients across all age groups. Prepares the patient for surgery in cooperation with the anesthesia provider. Begins and continues discharge planning and education throughout the peri-operative experience. Observes behavioral and physiological changes and takes appropriate actions; documents in a timely manner. Assessment and reassessment of the patient is communicated clearly and concisely through charting. Documentation meets current standards, policies, and procedures and is completed within the shift. Assesses the general needs of the patient, reviews all systems, and assesses cardio-respiratory systems for changes. Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate actions in a timely manner. Displays the ability to adequately assess and reassess pain; utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Intra-operative Responsibilities: Ensures pre-op checklist is complete before the patient is taken into the surgical suite. Consistently is ready and prepared for assigned cases. Positions patients safely; pads and protects bony prominences. Preps and drapes patients correctly for all procedures. Carries out medical and surgical asepsis before, during, and after all procedures. Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of operating room suites before and between cases and after terminal case. Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications and parenteral fluids. Coordinates and supervises patient care; provides patient and family with teaching and education as necessary. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, their actions, and side effects. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the location, care, and operation of all surgical equipment. Directs and assists in maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments. Accurately records, handles, and labels specimens. Manages surgical counts according to policy and effectively communicates count status. Communicates laboratory and imaging service reports during the procedure. Provides a thorough report of the patient’s intra-operative condition to the PACU nurse. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring. Actively participates in instrument processing if needed. Is able to perform all duties of circulating RN and scrub RN once trained. Skills and Abilities: Must be available to work on a routine basis and be scheduled for call for emergency surgical services. Must be able to use a high level of abstract reasoning to assess patients, evaluate interventions, and revise plans of care according to patient outcomes. Basic computer skills are required, including the ability to navigate a Windows-based program.
