Job Title: Firewatch / Carpenter – Shipyard Staging and Support

Job Description

This role supports ship repair activities by constructing and maintaining temporary structures, staging, and support systems on and around dry-docked and waterborne vessels. You will build and manage keel blocking, cradles, shoring, cribbing, shelters, and temporary decking, including work in support of nuclear and radiological operations. The position also involves aligning navigation systems and operating specialized equipment to ensure safe and precise ship positioning and access.

Responsibilities

• Construct keel blocking, cradles, shoring, cribbing, staging, and other temporary structures to support ship repair activities.
• Perform tasks in support of nuclear and radiological work in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
• Align and check navigation lights to ensure proper operation and positioning.
• Operate optical transits and auto levels to establish accurate reference points and measurements.
• Set and align binnacles and compasses and establish benchmarks to support ship alignment and navigation accuracy.
• Erect and dismantle staging and scaffolding on dry-docked or waterborne ships, including staging around the sail, stern, and within internal tanks.
• Erect and dismantle all types of temporary platforms to provide safe access for shipyard personnel.
• Build shelters and plenums and install temporary blocking to support ongoing maintenance and repair operations.
• Maintain, adjust, and repair staging and associated equipment to ensure safe and reliable use.
• Lay out, manufacture, and install temporary decking aboard ships to provide safe working surfaces.
• Regularly inspect staging and scaffolding for any discrepancies that may compromise safety and take appropriate actions to correct identified issues.
• Notify the appropriate competent authority of any corrective actions taken or required to maintain safe staging and scaffolding conditions.
• Work from manlifts and other elevated platforms safely while performing construction, installation, and carpentry tasks related to staging and scaffolding.

Essential Skills

• Training, qualification, and experience performing tasks and using components similar to those outlined for TSD A5, including staging, scaffolding, and temporary support structures.
• Proven experience operating and working from a manlift (also known as JLG) in an industrial or shipyard environment.
• Demonstrated ability to erect, maintain, and remove pipe staging and related life rails, platforms, and access ways.
• Training, qualification, and medical fitness to wear respiratory protection devices in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134 (Subpart I).
• Training and qualification to wear safety harnesses and work from scaffolds and platforms where drop-off exceeds 5 feet in accordance with 29 CFR 1915 (Subpart I).
• Ability to operate optical transits and auto levels to support alignment and measurement tasks.
• Ability to set and align binnacles and compasses and establish accurate benchmarks.
• Strong understanding of safe work practices related to staging, scaffolding, and construction in a shipyard environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in shipyard, marine, or industrial construction environments involving staging, scaffolding, and temporary structures.
• Experience in carpentry, construction, or installation work related to staging, decking, and temporary platforms.
• Familiarity with inspection and maintenance of staging and scaffolding to meet safety and regulatory requirements.
• Comfort working in and around nuclear or radiological support areas under strict safety protocols.

Work Environment

This position is based on a major submarine base and involves daily work on and around dry-docked and waterborne ships. The environment is industrial and maritime, with exposure to outdoor conditions, confined spaces such as internal tanks, and areas supporting nuclear and radiological work. Work follows strict safety regulations, including the use of respiratory protection, safety harnesses, and other personal protective equipment. Hours and shifts may vary based on project needs, and the role requires consistent adherence to shipyard safety procedures and operational protocols.

This is a Contract position based out of Silverdale, WA.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $28.00/hr.
