Teaching Assistant

Responsibilities Student Assistant I - Entry level/Semi-skilled : Work is under immediate supervision with well‑established methods. Assignments are standardized, routine, and repetitive; may involve special equipment, software applications, or tools per established procedures. The supervisor provides assignment, flow control, and production level instructions. Student Assistant II - Intermediate/Advanced : Work is under general supervision. Work objectives are set but methods are left to the employee. Assignments vary, less routine, and require moderate responsibility. May involve sophisticated data systems and confidential information; requires training and independent judgment, analysis, and decision‑making. Minimum of one year of experience in the same student assistant assignment required. Student Assistant III - Specialist/Lead : Work is under general supervision. Assignments involve a broad variety of skills and tasks, requiring considerable independent judgment and decision‑making. May direct the work of lower‑level student employees. Minimum of two years of experience in the same student assistant assignment required. Qualifications and Physical Demands Education and Experience Student Assistant I – Little or no prior experience or education required. Student Assistant II – Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required. Student Assistant III – Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required. Skills and Competencies Required skills to perform the job assignment. Limited independent judgment and decision‑making depending on level and assignment. Ability to balance work and studies. Students must be full‑time, enrolled in at least 12 units at one the Coast Community College District colleges to be eligible. Conditions of Employment Hours : No more than 19.5 working hours per week during fall and spring semesters; maximum 28 hours per week outside these semesters. Student Assistants may not be employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Employment is contingent upon verification of class schedule, employment history, background verification, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the Board of Trustees. No fringe benefits, paid holidays, or compensation for time not worked. Regular attendance is essential; inability to meet attendance may result in loss of employment.
