About the Position

Job Title: RN Hemodialysis Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Hemodialysis Duration: 14 weeks Shift: 3 days per week Hours per Shift: 10.5 hours Experience: Minimum one (1) year clinical experience in medical-surgical, emergency room, or critical care. Minimum one (1) year related experience in hemodialysis as a dialysis nurse. License: Current NY State RN License required. Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required. Must-Have: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. Description: Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, Hemodialysis Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to End Stage Renal Disease patients who require hemodialysis based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Hemodialysis Nurses include but are not limited to: Conducting ongoing focused physical, psychosocial, and pain assessments. Assessing patient education needs. Utilizing assessments to identify problems and make nursing diagnoses. Formulating goals and outcomes to create an individualized plan of care for ESRD patients on hemodialysis. Prioritizing and implementing an efficient nursing plan of care. Conducting timely evaluations, recognizing changes in patient conditions. Determining when reassessments are needed and adjusting the plan of care as necessary. Comparing expected and achieved outcomes of nursing care. Evaluating patient responses to interventions and communicating with other healthcare team members. Maintaining an orderly, efficient, and timely flow of patients. Recognizing and reporting errors, near misses, or unusual occurrences. Initiating corrective action when appropriate. Developing short and long-term goals specifying expected outcomes. Making accurate, complete, and timely entries into patient medical records. Demonstrating competency in setting up and operating the dialysis machine. Assessing patient vital signs, weight, and pain. Observing for signs of volume overload and complications of renal failure. Knowledge of critical lab values. Knowing special procedures related to dialysis such as changing dialyzers and interpreting transmembrane pressure. Initiating and terminating hemodialysis treatments. Monitoring blood pressure frequently as needed. Ensuring lines and connections are secure to avoid separation of blood lines. Observing for complications such as air embolism, hemolysis, and reporting immediately to the physician. Preparing, administering, and recording prescribed medications. Reporting adverse reactions to medications or treatments. Recognizing signs and symptoms of respiratory emergencies and starting standard interventions. Demonstrating efforts in the prevention of hospital acquired conditions and falls. Initiating referrals to outpatient clinics and community resources. Utilizing available resources in planning care and consulting as necessary. Working collaboratively as a team player. Demonstrating respect and professionalism in all interactions. Exhibiting critical thinking, math, and computer skills. Communicating effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Maintaining the ability to work flexible hours.
