Essential Responsibilities - specific to this job Assumes the responsibilities of a special education teacher, including the responsibilities of a teacher as listed in the Prince William County Public Schools Regulation 561.01-1, Certificated Personnel Responsibilities and Duties. Develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), plans curriculum, develops individualized lesson plans, and prepares instructional materials that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students, considering the Virginia Standards of Learning, local requirements, and physical, behavioral, emotional, communicative, and academic levels of development, and serves as a case manager of students with disabilities. Serves and instructs students who have a variety of disabilities and require specialized instruction and who access general education curriculum or adapted curriculum across the continuum in all areas specified by the IEP. Serves students in Special Education - Specialized Programs in Prince William County Public Schools and may, at times, support the needs of students served in the Resource Model (Level 1) as needed and appropriate to each student. Serves as case manager of students with disabilities and collects/reports data and student progress on IEP goals. Utilizes models for teaching and support across the content and grade level continuum within a small group special education setting. Utilizes models for teaching and support across the continuum using delivery models such as consult, push-in, pull-out, small group, and co-teaching as per student IEPs. Leverages and coordinates available resources to support the specially designed instruction and accommodations required by students with disabilities. Ensures IEP data collection and quarterly reporting to families about each child’s progress on their IEP goals. Develops and implements a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques, e.g., hands-on, student interaction, lecture, group work, etc., to present instructional content to the students. Plans, integrates, and utilizes technology for classroom instruction and student access as per IEPs. Utilizes assistive technology and specialized equipment. Works with students to increase motivation, provides consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to students for all learning activities. Develops and implements a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with the IEP using a variety of positive behavioral supports. Participates in the development and implementation of behavioral intervention plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process. Administers, interprets, and reports standardized test results for purposes of evaluating educational progress and determining eligibility for special education. Participates in staff, department, and special education committee meetings as required. Maintains a system of record-keeping and data collection following required procedures. Compiles and maintains the special education component of the Student Education Record. Completes Prince William County Public Schools’ 30-hour staff development requirement. Participates in specialized staff development activities to improve job-related skills and apply best practices in working with students with disabilities. Provides instructional services and teaches courses aligned with student needs and expected content/courses. Consults and collaborates with colleague teachers and specialists, regarding instructional and behavioral strategies as per student IEPs. Informs others who have a legitimate educational interest about needed accommodations and modifications required by the students’ IEPs. Plans and supervises assignments for teacher assistant(s) and/or other volunteer(s). Performs other duties assigned. Education or Equivalency Requirements Minimum: Bachelor's Degree Preferred: Master's Degree Work Experience Requirements Equivalent to at least Type Area or Field Certification and License Requirements State Hold a Virginia teaching certificate with endorsements in the area of disability served; in lieu of complete endorsement, a conditional license may be granted if the teacher is working toward complete endorsement at a rate of a minimum of six semester hours per year.
