Responsibilities Perform highly advanced psychiatric assessment work and report directly to the State Hospital Medical Director. Conduct psychiatric activities, monitor trends, diagnose, and treat State Hospital patients. Administer quality and appropriate specialized psychiatric treatments, assessments, and procedures as needed. Review and analyze system data to ensure individualized recovery plans and make decisions with the Recovery Team. Ensure recovery plans are implemented and provide consultation or training to direct care staff. Attend weekly/monthly meetings, lead/discuss changes, and follow through on implementation plans. Participate in committees of the State Hospital Governing Body, performance improvement activities, and other clinically related committees as requested. Plan, assign, and guide the work of others in the multidisciplinary approach to patient care; may supervise others depending on structure. Work independently with extensive latitude for initiative and judgment. Participate in disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation when required, possibly with alternate shift or location. Essential Job Functions Attend work regularly and work specific or rotating schedules, including extended shift and overtime as needed. Utilize a multidisciplinary approach to complete psychiatric assessments and administer treatments and medications within State Hospital policies and procedures. Conduct performance improvement reviews with the Recovery Team, attend meetings and committees, and perform medication reviews and audits. Establish physician-patient relationships face‑to‑face or via telemedicine. For new admissions, contact must be established immediately. Prescribe medications, review lab work, modify recovery plans, and record deliberations accurately in the electronic health record. Develop and implement psychiatric recovery plans, documenting individualized supports, interventions, and least‑restrictive practices. Lead discussions in staff meetings, consult with family and LARs, and obtain timely medication consents. Collaborate between psychiatry and neurology for dually diagnosed individuals. Consult with other clinicians to develop interventions, reduce restraints, and manage acute psychiatric care, including authorizing emergency restraints. Analyze system data and trends, present changes, chair discussions, and apply audit tools for quality improvement. Maintain communication with the Medical Director and other staff to ensure continuity of services. Participate in mandatory training and comply with HIPAA, state and federal rules, and TJC standards. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of general medicine and psychiatry procedures. Knowledge of principles for developing person‑centered care and recovery plans. Knowledge of psychiatric treatment principles and staff collaboration. Knowledge of state formulary guidelines for medication doses. Knowledge and skills in providing inpatient psychiatric services. Knowledge and skills in using electronic health records and Microsoft Office. Skills in caring for patients and using diagnostic tools. Skills in conducting psychiatric research when necessary. Ability to assess, diagnose, prescribe, and supervise treatment while complying with local policy and laws. Ability to direct psychiatric activities and treat mental disorders. Ability to interpret psychological diagnoses and analyses. Ability to develop policies and procedures, prepare and supervise records. Ability to solve complex medical issues using evidence and guidelines. Ability to facilitate a unified recovery team approach with patient involvement. Ability to promote continuous quality improvement and adhere to improvement plans. Ability to manage polypharmacy and justify use of multiple psychotropic medications. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise work. Ability to work independently with good judgment and time management. Ability to complete annual and required training such as CPR and safe restraints. Ability to organize and present information orally and in writing. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Applicant must have or be able to obtain an unrestricted Texas medical license and be board certified or board eligible (completed residency in psychiatry) prior to the start date. Initial Screening Criteria Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). At least three years’ experience working as a psychiatrist is preferred. Twelve (12) months’ experience working with people with psychiatric disorders is preferred. Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
