Supervisory Physician (Clinical Director)

Summary Join our team as a Supervisory Physician and lead with impact. The purpose of this position is two-fold: to serve as the Clinical Director and Chief of Staff of the Clinical Services Branch and to provide the diagnosis, clinical oversight, mentorship, and leadership to ensure high-quality, evidence-based patient care. REAL ID Requirement A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021). Duties Supervises, organizes and maintains medical services and committee activities as required by the Service Unit by‑laws, Rules and Regulations and for accreditation/certification. Plans work to be accomplished by staff and prepares schedules for completion of work; assigns work based on priorities and capabilities of employees and evaluates work performance. Provides or assures the provision of primary medical care in all medical categories to ambulatory patients. Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations. Provides medical care and public health services to individuals eligible for services provided by the IHS in homes, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the Service Unit. Total Compensation Package Physician Total Compensation | Pay (ihs.gov) Requirements Selectee may be subject to a probationary period. U.S. Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Position is covered by Public Law 101‑630, requiring contact or control over Indian children; applicants must meet legal background criteria. A one‑year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection or placement. Confidential Financial Disclosure Form required. Employee Health Policies related to Measles and Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunizations; vaccine exemption requests may be available per guidance. The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements; failure to maintain privileges may lead to adverse action up to removal from Federal service. Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check. Set up direct deposit for payroll. Background Investigation Applicants must undergo a pre‑employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. Continuous employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of the position. Failure to meet suitability expectations may lead to termination after beginning work. A candidate may be subject to a credit check as part of the background investigation process. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Experience may be credited for all qualifying roles, including volunteer and part‑time experience. Duties and responsibilities held must be clearly identified and the total number of hours per week specified. Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. Degree must be accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or another accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre‑medical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Minimum Qualifications GS‑15: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Graduate Training: At least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting (e.g., a 1‑year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training). Subsequent detail on internship, residency, and fellowship programs are described separately. Education This position has an education requirement. Candidates are encouraged to submit transcripts or a list of courses with titles, credit hours completed, and grades. Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application package. Official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer. Attendance and degrees from schools accredited by institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education may be credited. Foreign education must be accompanied by a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with the transcript. Additional Information This position is ineligible for the Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized, and a service agreement may be required to be signed. This position has no promotion potential. Government housing may be authorized at select locations. Student Loan Repayment Programs The Indian Health Service (IHS), National Health Service Corps (NHSC), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have student loan repayment programs for qualifying health disciplines. Opportunities for LRP are based on agency hiring priorities and availability of funds.
