Job Location: HAMILTON, TX 76531 Job Title: Certified Scrub Tech Department: Surgery Job Summary Assists in nursing care activities and institutional services in the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse and according to departmental policies. Performs “scrub” duties and specific institutional nursing services duties appropriate and authorized by the situation. Performs duties in sterilizing equipment and instruments. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I. Essential Duties and Responsibilities A. Assists in helping the surgeon accomplish a plan of care for the patient. a. Performs delegated duties as a “scrubbed” member of the nursing team, including preparing the room, supplies and equipment for the patient, assisting in preparing the preoperative site and draping the patient according to established procedure to provide an ample sterile field. b. Carries out nursing activities required during operations pertaining to handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains and dressings in such a manner as to ensure medical and surgical asepsis and safety to the patient. c. Assists in cleanup of room between cases and at the end of the schedule, including bagging of soiled linens, disposing of soiled gloves and debris, transporting soiled instruments and salvaged supplies to the workroom and washing of buckets. d. Assists in cleaning of entire OR and PACU area to include, wiping down all surfaces, changing linen, mopping floor, and cleaning patient restroom. e. Cleans instruments and wraps or packages for sterilization, while using knowledge of sterilization to sterilize instruments. f. Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. g. Observes and reports data on neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age‑specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy. B. Assists in lifting and transporting patients and transporting specimens. a. Transports patients from the nursing unit to the operating room and from the operating room to the recovery room if instructed to do so. b. Assists in the preparation of specimens and transporting them to a designated area. C. Assists in the preparation and aftercare of equipment and supplies. a. Cleans soiled instruments, using steam sterilizer, checks for defective items, assembles clean instruments in perfect condition trays and stores special items in designated areas. b. Selects instruments and supplies using surgeon preference cards and transports required operative setup to rooms for specific case. c. Tests operational efficiency of equipment prior to and after each case and reports problems to the nurse in charge. d. Sterilizes and disinfects instruments in Surgery, ER, RHC, Goldthwaite Clinic, and Hico Clinic. e. Assists in taking inventories of equipment and supplies. D. Assists surgeons in the application of casts in the treatment of fractures and in holding retractors and cutting sutures. a. Assists surgeon during procedures. Other Significant Requirements A. Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis. B. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere. C. Interacts with patients, family members and Medical Staff members on a continuous basis. D. Follows aseptic procedures and precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials. E. Uses appropriate phone etiquette when calling patients to schedule surgeries, pre‑ops, and back injections. F. Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Healthcare System. Qualifications Education: High school graduate or equivalent or graduate of a Certified Operating Room Technical program. Personal job‑related skills: Knowledge of surgical scrub duties preferred. Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions. Licensure, registry or certification: Certification as an Operating Room Technician preferred. Experience: a. Prior Work Experience: Operating Room experience preferred. b. Technical Training: Operating Room Technician program desired. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, pulling, and pushing when handling instruments. Lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless. #J-18808-Ljbffr Hamilton County Hospital District
