Recreation Specialist

Recreation Specialist Full‑Time Location: Northampton, MA Pay Rate: $20/hour Position Description: Responsible for performing a variety of duties to support families who have a member with a disability and/or autism by providing training, information, family contact, referrals to other services; conducting interest and social skills inventories; planning and delivering a variety of social and recreation programs and opportunities; connecting individuals with recreation opportunities in the community; educating the community regarding disabilities and/or autism; and serving as trainer for all ServiceNet employees as well as external professionals. Responsibilities Provide individualized and group support to families including: complete intakes/assessments, advise and communicate with families, develop community integration/recreation programs and recommendations, provide information on resources and services, connect families with other families and recreation opportunities in their community, and maintain files and records, including attendance and regular reports. Assess individual and group interest, availability, and needs; design, create, and adapt classes to meet the needs of changing populations, including online, in person, and in community settings; adapt teaching approach, communication methods, and access to meet the needs of a wide variety of abilities and interests, including developing visual supports as needed. Develop curriculum and teach classes based on the needs and interests of the group. Act as liaison between programs, families, providers, and allied professionals on routine programmatic or related matters; work with DDS, supervisor, other ServiceNet divisions, schools, and families to provide coordination, assistance, and resources to support the individual’s recreation and social needs. Promote community integration by advocating for inclusion with community organizations; encourage and support individuals and family members in their participation in community experiences. Develop an extensive community network through a diversity of contacts and maintain a broad base of knowledge of services available to families. Provide group and individualized training to individuals and families in developing skills and opportunities for meaningful, healthy relationships; serve as Whole Children/Milestones/Whole Selves representatives at conferences, workshops, and on committees. Engage in various outreach efforts to families, including a catalog of programs, website, personal contacts, and social media. Assist the Program Manager with various non-routine administrative and programmatic duties/projects that require research and assessment such as the development of proposal requests, training efforts, policies and procedures, and event coordination. Remain current on trends, legislation, and resources in the industry that will affect families and the resources available. Qualifications Broad knowledge of a discipline involving the use of a broad theoretical knowledge equal to a complete 4‑year college education or equivalent work experience. 1‑3 years direct experience working with families or individuals with disabilities. Maintains strict confidentiality of all organizational and client information and adheres to all applicable federal and state regulations in the performance of job duties. CPR & 1st Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain prior to or upon hire). Proactive Approaches to Behavioral Challenges (PABC) certification where required (or willingness to obtain prior to or upon hire). Broad knowledge of disability support services. Wide variety of duties requiring a general knowledge of related organizational policies and procedures and their application to cases not previously covered; duties require considerable judgment to work independently toward general results, to devise new or modify existing methods, techniques, or procedures, and to make related decisions controlled by precedent and within limits of established policy. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel), communication platforms such as Zoom or Webex, health record or other database. Outside and/or inside contacts involving carrying out organization policy or programs and influencing others where improper handling will have a marked effect on results; considerable tact required. Bi‑lingual preferred. Have and maintain a valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record. Reliable transportation/vehicle.
