Energy Analyst

Wage Range: $45.67 - $64.27

NATURE OF WORK

This position involves high-level statistical and analytical work in collecting and processing data on utility energy operations and equipment.

The Energy Analyst will develop subject-matter expertise in utility operations and performance, forecasting, analytics, and risk management. They will be responsible for tracking, monitoring and reporting on utility system performance and forecasts. Work is performed with a significant amount of independence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:


  • Monitors the utility SCADA Information System and determines if the SCADA system is reporting within established guidelines. Suggests potential corrective action when appropriate.
  • Identifies, obtains, and analyzes data to prepare reports and data sets regarding various aspects of utility operations including electric generation, energy sales and purchases, system demand, system efficiencies, fuel consumption and levels, output, energy costs, etc.
  • Analyzes and compiles data for submittal to Southwest Power Pool (SPP) in the Day-Ahead (DA) and Real Time (RT) markets. Validates DA parameter submissions and updates RT parameters in SPP integrated market (IM).
  • Reconciles submitted information with real-time performance metrics.
  • Monitors contract deliverables and compares with utility performance.
  • Responsible for a variety of reporting to regulating entities including SPP, state, and federal agencies.
  • May provide support and training for utility personnel.
  • Serves as LSA and liaison for the City of Fremont in SPP.
  • Identifies, generates and complies information for general accounting, outside auditors, and various governmental agencies for accounting and compliance reporting.
  • Develops long-term forecasts to support portfolio planning and support evaluation of procurement opportunities.
  • Support development of bi-annual budget through forecasting.
  • Utilizes a variety of computer software programs to prepare reports, graphs, and other material related to energy resources, finance models, usage trends, and customer statistics.
  • Serves as a resource for utility teams regarding current and past performance, forecasts, and provides advanced-level analysis and recommendations of root cause and corrective action.
  • Identifies and utilizes value-added performance metrics for the utility, reporting as appropriate.
  • Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job and other duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge of power plant operations and of standard practices.
  • Experience completing statistical analysis and reporting, building statistical models, and forecasting. Experience should include providing explanations of analysis and conclusions.
  • Experience identifying applicable datasets and methods for utilizing those datasets effectively.
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics and statistics as well as computer networks, relational databases, building macros, etc. to complete various statistical work and reports.
  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical and algebraic computations rapidly and accurately and to apply data to standard formulas used in utility operations and to identify deficiencies in operations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with utility personnel and outside contacts.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn and utilize various computer software programs necessary to perform the job.
  • Employees must be willing to be trained on and retain the knowledge to safely work in a complex work environment, including an electric generating plant.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field.
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical skills in systems and processes.
  • Advanced level Microsoft Excel and database proficiency.
  • High aptitude in querying data from SQL sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with complex models, data, and reports.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with or the ability to obtain pertinent knowledge of Utility operations, including technology, market, resources, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis concepts and modeling techniques.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle.
  • Must meet current applicable residency requirement.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work may performed in an outdoor/indoor environment under varying weather conditions. Position will require working on-site at various utility work locations.
  • Some occasional exposure to fumes, high noise levels, chemicals, working at heights and in confined spaces, fall hazards, hazardous materials, dust, and paint.
  • Interaction with co-workers is an everyday occurrence and requires the ability to direct, negotiate, and mediate.
  • Hours of work may vary and involve late hours, weekends and rotating shifts, and the employee must be able to responds to after-hour calls.
  • Work may involve lifting, climbing, and carrying of equipment and materials up to 40-60 lbs.
  • Work will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Other hazards that may be encountered are high traffic areas where trucks, loaders, and rail cars are moving and being loaded or unloaded.
