Main Responsibilities The Lead Psychiatrist performs highly advanced psychiatric work under direct supervision of the SSLC Medical Director. Responsibilities include directing, overseeing, and conducting patient examinations and diagnoses; administering psychiatric treatments and medications as needed; overseeing specialized psychiatric procedures; providing leadership to staff to ensure optimal quality psychiatric treatment services; monitoring trends, preparing reports, and recommending operational improvements. The Lead Psychiatrist acts as an active member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), reviews patient records, guides treatment team members, and participates in peer review and other clinically related committees. This role operates with extensive independence and uses initiative and judgment in patient care. Telework is available at the discretion of center leadership, with a mandatory on‑site presence of at least 40 hours per month. Essential Job Functions Regular attendance is required, including specific shift schedules and occasional overtime per agency policy. The psychiatrist may serve on‑call and manage patient stability via medication reviews, psychiatric clinics, and interdisciplinary counseling. Responsibilities include performing medication reviews, attending specialty clinics, developing and implementing individualized psychiatric treatment plans, managing acute care, monitoring quality data, leading staff performance evaluations, and maintaining communication with Medical Directors and other stakeholders. The role involves participation in various committees, compliance audits, and occasional travel to other SSLCs for team reviews and policy alignment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required knowledge includes general medicine and psychiatry procedures, individualized care planning, behavioral treatment principles, state formulary guidelines, residential service delivery for intellectual and developmental disabilities, and electronic health record utilization. Skills involve clinical assessment, prescription authority, policy development, team facilitation, quality improvement, polypharmacy management, supervision of staff, effective communication, and continuing education in areas such as CPR and restraint practices. Ability to work independently with good judgment, advanced time‑management, and organized presentation skills are essential. Licensing and Certification Requirements Candidates must be licensed (unrestricted) as a medical doctor in Texas and be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry. A current DEA registration certificate and a National Provider Identifier (NPI) are required, with enrollment as a Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider. Qualifications At least three (3) years of experience as a psychiatrist is required, with preferred experience working with individuals with mental illness and intellectual disabilities. Residency training is also preferred. Additional Requirements Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screening, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, HHS LEIE). All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and able to provide I‑9 documentation. Random drug testing and willingness to work overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays may be required.
