The Assistant Principal evaluates and supervises both professional and support staff. The Assistant Principal plans, organizes, and implements curricular and administrative functions for the school to provide support for the educational services with the resources available. These functions may include: District curriculum/program leadership and school-wide programming relative to assessment, curriculum development, special education, instructional practices, staff development, parent communication, scheduling, main office management, school discipline and safety, student transportation and facilities oversight. The goal is to support the building Principal leading the school to ensure all students learn and staff work collaboratively to accomplish this. Qualifications (Preferred) Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Management or related field. Licensure as an administrator/supervisor or eligible for licensure by start date required – Principal/Assistant Principal Gr. PK-6. Prior experience in leadership roles preferred. Knowledge of current Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Deep understanding of evidence-based practices for teaching in Grades PK-6. Knowledge of best practices for assessing student progress toward achievement of standards. Knowledge of child development and best practices for supporting the social and emotional development of elementary school students. Knowledge of culturally-responsive classroom practices and a firm belief in celebrating diversity while improving equity and inclusion. A minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience. Experience as a coach or mentor is preferred. Proven success as a professional-development provider and curriculum developer. Excellent communication skills. Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and fingerprint check. Performance Responsibilities Teaching and Learning Leadership Motivate and engage students, parents, and teachers to maximize opportunities for all students to reach their full potential. Assist in preparing and delivering professional development, staff and curriculum meetings. Be a member and facilitator of various districtwide committees, teams and working groups as needed. Know how to use a range of effective strategies, analyze instruction, and provide clear, specific information on strategy implementation. Assist in the analysis of school-wide curriculum, instruction, and assessment strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in all content areas and teaching effectiveness. Participate in school improvement planning activities. Student Support Leadership Identify student educational needs through the systematic quantitative and qualitative analysis of data to develop and implement a Tiered System of Supports with services as appropriate and resources available. Analyze related data and work with classroom teachers on implementation of instructional strategies and practices consistent with that data to result in improved student performance. Provide oversight and support for implementation of IEPs, 504s, and EL students by attending meetings as needed and supporting students, staff and families of students with specific needs. Lead and motivate staff to view student success through a lens of equity and actively demonstrate culturally-responsive practices, celebrating the diversity of students and families. Coordinate the enforcement of student discipline policies and monitor all safety and security concerns, including student infractions on the bus. Lead and coordinate a tiered system to supporting the behavioral, social and emotional needs for all students. Lead and coordinate the school tiered assessment and data team. Communication Support and promote two-way communication with families building a trusting and collaborative relationship. Assist in the communication planning for the school and district. Contribute to the communication of important information to key stakeholders, while acting as a liaison with parents and community members. Building Management Assist the Principal in organizing and facilitating test administration of local, state, and national assessments as directed. Coordinate the administration of school attendance policies and staff time sheets. Manage and prepare the school schedule, staff duty assignments, and the preparation of monthly and annual school activity calendars. Coordinate the general upkeep and condition of the facility. Perform other duties as required or assigned by the Principal, Director of Student Services, Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent of Schools. Supervision and Evaluation Evaluate, coach and supervise professional and support staff as assigned by the Principal, consistent with the terms of the collective bargaining agreements and/or District policy. Provide feedback during coaching on teaching effectiveness and fidelity to guidance as provided by the teacher's guide including concrete suggestions for improvements, especially related to strategies for working with struggling students, English language learners, and others with special needs within the regular classroom. Create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration among staff to promote professional growth and accelerate the achievement of all students. Contribute to an overall school culture where ongoing personal and professional development is valued. Stay current in the areas of teaching strategies, curriculum, and technology. Support student needs related to behavior, social and emotional development. Provide instructional leadership to school personnel in effective uses of best practices and resources to improve teaching and learning. Collaborate with teachers to effectively integrate best practices into curriculum, instruction and assessment practices.
