The Opportunity WSDOT is seeking multiple motivated and skilled Bridge Maintenance Specialists to join our team on beautiful Mercer Island, WA. In this unique and highly specialized role, you will perform journey‑level maintenance, repair, and operational work supporting the iconic I‑90 Floating Bridge and its associated maintenance facilities. Your expertise will help ensure the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of one of the region's most critical transportation assets, serving thousands of travelers every day. What to Expect Work is generally performed Monday–Thursday on four 10‑hour shifts; however, weekends, holidays, night work, and extended hours may be required for emergency response and non‑scheduled callouts. The position requires the ability to report to the duty station within 60 minutes, respond in all weather conditions, and participate in rotational night, standby, and call‑back assignments. Responsibilities Perform Journey‑level bridge maintenance, preventative and repair work, including tasks involving both structural and non‑structural elements Fabricate steel and aluminum components using proper tools and techniques depending on the task assigned. Perform work on navigation lighting, architectural lighting, cathodic protection, workboat moorage condition, and readiness for wind events. Adjust pontoon positioning cables with the use of hydraulic pumps and related equipment. Perform repairs to boater protection buoys and cables. Dehumidify pontoon interiors, and other related systems. Perform maintenance on the bridge control system and components of which include: water sensors, fire systems, facility HVAC, standby generator and related switchgear and weather stations. Perform routine and post‑event bridge inspections for both bridge integrity and pontoon condition. Adhere to safety policies and maintain diligence in performing work in a safe manner. Perform safe operation of specialized equipment such as cranes, work boats up to 50’ in length, trucks up to 80,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) including Under Bridge Inspection Trucks (UBIT) mobile cranes and Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA). Perform proper use of all types of power, air, and hand tools, such as compressors, welders and torches. Wear and maintain all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for each task, including respirators. Safely set up and remove traffic control. Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required: Structural and Mechanical Trades Expertise: Demonstrated journey‑level proficiency in one or more construction or maintenance trades, including construction, steel fabrication, carpentry, electrical work, concrete work, mechanical repair, millwright work and related disciplines. Ability to inspect, maintain, repair, fabricate, and install structural and mechanical components supporting transportation infrastructure and facilities. Mechanical: Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. Building and Construction: Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood which includes the application of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of bridges, or other structures such as highways and buildings. Engineering and Technology: Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates: Providing information to supervisors, co‑workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e‑mail, or in person. Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment: Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles or watercraft. Communicating with People Outside the Organization: Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e‑mail. Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. Additional Requirements A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state‑owned vehicles. Obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification. Must be able to respond on site to an emergency within 60 minutes while on standby. Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to get one within 6 months of employment. Important Notes This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. This position is not eligible for remote work. In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 2% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2026, upon legislative approval. Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and often near moving traffic and heavy equipment, requiring heightened situational awareness and strict adherence to safety practices. The role involves physically demanding tasks, including deploying traffic control devices, flagging, and operating maintenance vehicles and equipment, with extended periods of standing and walking. Employees must wear appropriate PPE at all times. The salary listed includes 10% assignment pay for this job class as well as the 5% King County Premium pay. This position is subject to the drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
