Job Description:\n\n \n \n CAREER PREPARATION PERIOD SPECIALIST\n Position Title: Career Preparation Specialist\n FLSA: Exempt\n \n The Career Preparation Period Specialist position provides instructional support for a U.S Department of Labor Job Corps contractor, Human Learning Systems. The Job Corps program is a federally funded residential training program. Job Corps’ mission is to educate and train youth ages 16 -24 for successful careers in the nation’s fastest-growing industries. \n Summary of Duties: The Career Preparation Period Specialist provides instruction during the Career Preparation Phase of enrollment. Assists students in becoming acclimated to the Job Corps Program and the Center. Works with the team members to assist students in gaining employability skills. Puts into place all systems necessary to meet any special needs a student might have. Establishes a high degree of student/instructor rapport. Records daily attendance in the Center Information System (CIS). Coordinates enrollment requirements in conjunction with the Career Counselor to meet Department of Labor (DOL) requirement of CPP.\n Description of Duties:\n \n Develops effective student educational experiences that engage and stimulate student learning.\n Adequately prepares for instruction. Integrates math, reading, and writing concepts with employability, and Career Success Standards skills with lesson planning.\n Develops and implements curriculum and training outlines necessary to attain student, Center and DOL goals.\n Utilizes Job Corps guidelines and subject course guides.\n Has an accurate syllabus for the course and completes lesson plans as required?\n Creates and maintains training records for each subject area.\n Conducts classes that explain test preparation and study skills.\n Conducts assessments to determine areas of strength and difficulty, using this information to prescribes individual plans.\n Identifies appropriate materials.\n Designs instruction to meet individual student needs.\n Develops and implements Career Success Standard projects.\n Meets with academic and career technical training instructors to identify required skills that can be taught and reinforced with applying technical skills in an academic setting and in technical instruction.\n Develops and implements applied academic projects.\n Identifies students personal and academic issues so that the appropriate support can be provided.\n Administers an accommodations assessment.\n Determines career development readiness and determines barriers to career transition and documents these as appropriate.\n Submits ESPs in a timely manner, documents student progress.\n Records daily attendance.\n Administers accurate completion of the training records and course guides.\n Documents each progress in case notes. Maintains curriculum necessary to attain goals.\n Prepares lesson plans at least two weeks in advance.\n Submits necessary schedule change information.\n Documents and distributes CPAR in the CPP/MYPACE phase of the program as necessary. Ensures and documents contact with parents of minors as necessary into the CIS System as a case note in the RAP format.\n Engage in job search and preparation (resume writing, emailing inquiries, etc).\n Requisitions consumable supplies (e.g., paper, ribbons, toner cartridges, etc.).\n Prepares/maintains accurate records both electronically and manually.\n Helps students understand program objectives and performance standards.\n Helps students identify and make use of supplemental instructional/media resources.\n Encourages self-­reliance, problem-­solving, critical-­thinking, creativity, and performance skills.\n Collaborates with other staff to gather information to ensure that all student’s needs, concerns, challenges, and career plans are met.\n Shares knowledge and resources beneficial to the enhancement of student learning.\n Evaluates student performance in a timely manner as outlined in the (SOP) Standard Operation Procedure.\n Consults with counseling staff as needed (e.g., phone calls, E-­mail, written notes, meetings, etc.).\n Inspects classroom equipment to ensure that it is ready when needed.\n Performs preventive maintenance and safety checks, provides routine cleaning of equipment, classroom, and all spaces according to the Covid-19 guidelines.\n Increase critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills of students.\n Provide guidance and structure for self-­directed and life-­long learning.\n Motivate students to actively participate and engage in learning.\n Be able to impart real-­world scenarios to the application of classroom content and objectives.\n Produce and instruct high-­quality, well-­prepared classes where learning is promoted students enjoy the learning process.\n Ensure students’ technical skills meet the needs of Work-­based learning partners and job placement requirements.\n Uses problem-­solving techniques to address and resolve concerns.\n PROVIDE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION\n \n Follow curriculum guidelines, organizes program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in trade\n Maintain a strong instructional focus utilizing the elements of effective instruction\n Communicate a high level of expectation to all students\n Communicate clear learning goals to students\n Adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students\n Develop lessons and lesson plans that address various learning styles\n Sequence content at an appropriate pace\n Use appropriate level of questioning to promote understanding\n Relate lesson content to prior and future learning\n Require students to summarize information in written and/or verbal form\n Appropriately recognize and reinforce individual student effort\n Represent knowledge/information non-­linguistically through a variety of methods\n Organize students in cooperative or ability groups when appropriate\n Require students to analyze and apply knowledge\n Conduct ongoing assessments for learning\n \n PROVIDE EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT\n \n Effectively and consistently enforce rules and follow procedures\n Redirect students naturally and immediately without disrupting others\n Be well-­organized and have all materials, equipment, etc., ready for immediate use\n Carry out smooth and effective transitions (e.g., from one activity to another, as students enter and leave the classroom)\n Establish appropriate classroom rules and procedures that are clearly understood by all students\n \n PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT\n \n Participate in Professional growth opportunities and demonstrate professionalism\n Participate in professional and/or community organizations or events\n Complete routine assigned tasks and comply with DOL/HLS requirements\n Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, stakeholders and students\n \n \n Monitors Student’s Behavior: Ensures proper conduct of students in all areas. Assists staff with behavior problems coordinating referrals to PBSO as required. Creates methods and programs to motivate constructive student behavior. Maintains awareness of the individual needs of various minority and cultural groups. Monitors accountability process.\n \n Develops Students: Establishes high level of mutual trust and support with others. Expresses positive expectations of others, even in difficult situations. Creates a learning atmosphere. Reassures and encourages performance improvement. Provides timely coaching. Identifies successes and areas of improvement. Participates on a center committee.\n \n Teamwork: Builds pride and commitment though effective teamwork and collaboration. Adheres to established company policies and procedures and supports all programs.\n Makes effective use of time, materials, and resources by planning, scheduling and organizing work. Communicates in an open and honest manner.\n \n Demonstrates excellent decision-­making and problem-­solving skills: Anticipates and resolves problems, demonstrating good judgment.\n \n Modeling, Mentoring and Monitoring: Demonstrates on-­going commitment to preparing young people for the workforce by modeling, mentoring and monitoring excellence in the eight Career Success Standards of: workplace relationships and ethics;, information management, communications, multicultural awareness, personal growth and development, career and personal planning, interpersonal skills; and, independent living.\n \n Career Management Team (CMT): Members contribute to the success of students by actively participating in the CMT process. The CMT is responsible for students’ successful matriculation through the Job Corps program, beginning in Career Preparation Phase (CPP) and continuing throughout Career Transition Phase (CTP). In the Career Development Phase (CDP) the CMT supports students as they earn, TABE gains, HSE/HSD, certifications, and trade completions. When students move to CTP and separate from the program, the CMT supports graduates in placement within 12 months. Former enrollees receive placement services within 3 months. Both have 15 months for the Q2/Q4 post placement survey. CMT is responsible to ensure that the following areas are supported within each CMT: OMS Report Card, CTT OMS, Projected Separations, High School Equivalency, CTT completion, CTT Industry Credential, Literacy and Numeracy TABE, Evaluation of Student Progress, MyPACE, PAR, WBL, Career Transitions Readiness, CSS, Employability Skills, Contextual Learning, Career Transitions/Career.\n \n Workplace Standards: Maintains required certifications and/or licenses including a valid driver’s license and insurance when required by position. Does not engage in activities other than official business during working hours. Reports significant/major incidents or accidents. Cooperates in external/internal investigations as requested. Completes PRH, Corporate and Center training as required and demonstrates competencies accordingly. Complies with DOL, Corporate and Center guidelines.\n Credentials:\n Education and\n Experience\n Must possess High School Diploma or equivalency.\n Certifications,\n Licenses, Registration\n Valid state driver’s license;; CPR/First Aid certifications\n Physical Demand\n The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
