About Inwood Academy for Leadership Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school that began as an idea among community members who longed to see more educational choices offered to the children of Washington Heights and Inwood. Commitment to Mission All staff must be willing to commit to our mission: Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School will empower students in Inwood and Washington Heights to become agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development and college preparedness. Our staff regard our student leaders as burgeoning assets to their community and help them develop the tools they need to be successful in college and beyond. IAL is committed to providing a well-rounded educational experience for all students we serve. We are looking for candidates who are hardworking, flexible, and innovative as well as able to embody the IAL traits of leadership in their daily work (honesty, integrity, responsibility, caring and restraint). Reports to: Dean of Culture Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in related fields is required; a Master’s degree is preferred. 3+ years of experience working with youth or teaching in an urban school setting. Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and needs. Experience and general understanding of educational administration. Training in and knowledge of behavioral management techniques. Experience and/or training with restorative practices. Responsibilities Focus Area #1: School Culture and Climate Maintain Positive School Culture Amongst Students Work in partnership with the school leadership teams to establish a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, positive school culture. Be highly present and visible during all school hours and activities, especially during arrivals and dismissals, relentlessly ensuring that policies are maintained while promoting a positive culture amongst staff and students. Proactively circulate throughout classrooms and hallways during the day to gain valuable insights on student behavior. Provide oversight and management of lunch and recess personnel as needed, ensuring a safe, organized, and enjoyable environment for students during these times. This involves coordinating lunch schedules, maintaining supervision standards, and implementing policies and procedures that support a positive student experience. Utilize the Collaborative Problem Solving Plan B approach by helping staff identify the lagging skills necessary for individual students’ success. Systems of Behavior Intervention Maintain all systems of behavior intervention that exist within the school which includes, but is not limited to; attendance, lateness, cell phone, uniform, response to infractions of the disciplinary code. When a policy does not exist, the team works with the Director of School Culture to establish the policy. Create behavior intervention plans for all students who consistently violate the following policies, but is not limited to; attendance, lateness, cell phone policy, uniform, response to infractions of the disciplinary code. The deans will work in collaboration with the SST to create and implement these plans. Monitor the data from all systems and all interventions that include, but are not limited to; attendance, lateness, cell phone policy, uniform, response to infractions of the disciplinary code. The deans will share this data with the school leadership team and SST in regular meetings and offer suggestions for improvement where appropriate. Oversee all systems of intervention and behavior consequences which include, but are not limited to; suspensions (in-school and out of school), restoration, and mediations. Maintain accurate records of all systems and interventions and ensures compliance with all documents related to behavior incidents, behavior interventions and consequences. Focus Area #2: Effective Collaboration Amongst School Teams, Families and Community Effective Collaboration Serve as an active member of the School Support Team; informing them of important data trends, co-planning initiatives and events, collaborate on home visits, and supporting in other ways as needed. Support the school leadership team by providing key data to inform decision making processes and to keep the school leadership team informed on the school “pulse”. Attend grade team meetings to communicate and monitor intervention plans and important data related to the students in that grade level. Meet with individual teachers or teams of teachers as necessary to address concerns. Lead workshops as needed during teacher orientation. Collaborate with the school leadership team on Student Orientation Week to ensure all students are aware of the guidelines and expectations that are necessary for their success. May be required to stay late in cases of crisis management and for attendance at school evening events. Effective Communication Involve the school community in the creation of behavior plans and initiatives in order to hear their voices and have effective plans around student behavior. Inform the school community about behavior interventions to the level that is necessary to ensure that all stakeholders have the necessary information they need to complete their jobs. Involve families in the formulation of behavior intervention plans for their child in order to hear their perspective and create plans that are effective and supported at home. Inform families about decisions regarding behavior interventions to the level that is necessary to ensure compliance with all state and federal guidelines concerning student behavior.
